Packaging Machine Operator

TERM: Permanent, Full-Time
Salary: $19.85 per hour

REPORTS TO: Plant Supervisor
POSITION OVERVIEW
The primary role of the Packaging Machine Operator is to complete daily production responsibilities and tasks related to the processing, maintenance, and sanitation activities on the designated line (business unit) required for the manufacture of safe and high-quality food products. Packaging Machine Operator is a member of the ESV Fresh & Frozen packaging team and as such, participates in team efforts to achieve assigned business unit goals; works closely with team members to ensure all the production line activities are completed on time and according to SOPs and regulatory requirements; and provides support to other roles and business units within the egg operations as required. This position requires shift work, weekend, and holiday rotations. As required, the Packaging Machine Operator provides back- up for other positions within ESV operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS
2.1. Production
• Perform daily production line responsibilities and tasks relative to the business unit. Specific job duties could include, but are not limited to, any of the following:
• Operate packaging machinery of several types at varying stages of the production line, must be vigilant and perceptive while operating the machinery to avoid accidents, always perform corrective actions quickly and safely.
• Must be efficient and able to make decisions on meeting daily production quotas, as well being able to operate the machinery for several hours at a time.
• Sort and weigh products packaged to ensure requirements are met with minimum errors made during the production.
• Apply labels/printing & scanning the quantity produced and transfer products to the final shipping area if required.
• Perceive the production line ahead of you to anticipate errors and adjust as needed to prevent unnecessary delays.
• Perform basic & weekly preventive maintenance on the machine to ensure it is completely functional and safe to operate.
• Complete paperwork and other minor administrative tasks during the shift and ensure all information is entered on work orders in timely manner and is legible.
• Support other production line workers to ensure they do not become fatigue or distracted during daily operation.
• Report malfunctions or errors to supervising staff immediately and relay important information about the issue.
• Performing CIP`s and sanitation procedures on the machines as required during the production line switch over.
• Perform a daily routine of the production sanitation process including CIP, the equipment’s, production lines etc.
2.2. Sanitation & Cleaning
• Apply sanitation procedures to ensure food safety of the production areas, machines, and equipment. Examples of required sanitation procedures include the following
• Performs an end of the day production sanitation process, CIP equipment, production line etc.
• Record sanitation information into log sheets and checklists
• Ensure work area is always kept clean.
• Assist in keeping common areas clean I.E., washrooms, change rooms, lunchroom.
2.3. Food Safety
• Follow all the Good Manufacturing Practices, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory requirements (SFCR, SQF etc.).
• Contribute to the writing and review of standard operating procedures and standard work documentation for processes and tasks in work area.
• Comply and uphold quality systems requirements.
2.4. Safety & Environment
• Adhere to all safety practices and protocols related to job responsibilities and tasks including wearing all PPE when handling chemicals.
• Act in accordance with company policies related to personal and group health and safety practices and procedures.
2.5. Continuous Improvement
• Engage in permanent and continuous learning by participating in on-job, internal and/or external training programs. Apply learnings to work environment and role.
• Actively participate in continuous improvement programs such as coaching sessions, sharing of knowledge and skills, and contributing to team efforts to achieve assigned balanced scoreboard goals.
3. REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills, Ability)
• Good English communication skills (verbal and written); able to read and follow detailed instructions
• Knowledge of chemical handling and WHMIS
• Capable of performing multitask and being meticulous on attention to detail.
• Paperwork filled out accurately and consistently as per defined procedures.
• Working knowledge of and adherence to HACCP and SQF requirements and standard operating procedures.
• Ability to perform under HACCP and SQF standards for quality.
• Know sanitation of rooms, and equipment, CIP, and steaming cycles.
• Ability to operate Domino/Data Max printer I.E. change/create messages, print out labels.
• Effectively collaborates with others to achieve area and team goals. Communicates information with fellow team members, lead hand, and other department team members.
• Participate in required meetings and safety discussions providing input and
• recommendations.
• Deal with changes, delays, or unexpected events in a calm and timely manner. I.E. Willingness to learn new equipment.
4. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma
• Two years’ experience in machine operating in a high-volume manufacturing environment related to food, chemical cleaning, and/or a similar industry.
• Previous experience in a food processing facility and/or similar industry is an asset.
• Strong technical competence I.E. Proven ability to safely operate production/processing equipment.
• Mechanical aptitude. Dexterity to turn valves, connect pipes, assemble fittings.
• Fluent English (verbal and written communication skills) with the ability to follow and give clear instructions.
• Highly detail oriented.
• Able to lift 15-20 kg
• Able to work in confined spaces.
• Capability to work independently without constant supervision.
• Forklift license is an asset
• Knowledge of barcode scanning procedures & basic proficiency in MS Word, MS
• Outlook is an asset.
