Tolai Warwagira (Rabaul Festival) Vinyl 45rpm music
Description
I have eight rare, very unique 45rpm vinyl records of the Tolai Warwagira — also known as the Rabaul Festival — recorded live in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, 1973. It’s hard to believe that they are 50 years old. The records are pristine the covers show the wear of being moved over time but they’ve always been in a dry place. I believe I played the records only once or twice before copying them, at that time, to magnetic tape. Akin to some of the famous “Singsings” of Papua New Guinea, this particular festival was reknowed in the country and Western Pacific. In reality, these records were funded by the Australian Territorial Government — which governed the country prior to independence in the mid 1970s. Important to note that for the most part this region of the island of New Guinea was pretty much unknown, until the Japanese declared war in the Pacific-Asian Region in the late 1930s. Prior to this relatively few people from other parts of the world had access to its wondrous peoples and natural world. So these records were made less than 30 years after the very town of Rabaul and it’s coastline on the northern shores was bombed and attacked by the Japanese in their thrust to invade Australia by beginning to assemble on the island of New Guinea.
The records revel both traditions of the unique cultures as well as the pervasive influence of a missionary invasion. The spirit of the various indigenous people come through in the audio tracks. Unknown to most people is the fact that there are over 800 languages in this relatively small country which comprises half of the large island of New Guinea. Some of the tracks are in these unique languages though a good many are in Tok Pison, the imposed but unifying pigeon English.
You won’t be disappointed if you’re open to indigenous possibilities.
I may be able to deliver to Lunenburg or Bridgewater and perhaps to Halifax. At purchasers expense I am certainly prepared to ship within Canada and possibly internationally.
