Schooner Pegasus for sale
Description
The schooner Pegasus was built in 1971 in Dublin Shore, Nova Scotia by Jimmy Smith. It has had few owners over the years and is in excellent condition. Before I bought Pegasus in 2022 she was owned by a professional shipwright and had much work completed.
Hull planking was all refastened and the entire hull was covered in fibreglass cloth and epoxy. The deck and cabin also received the same, the cabin top receiving 30 ounces of fibreglass cloth and epoxy, it is solid. During the summer of 2022 I installed a brand new gimballed Force 10 three burner propane stove with oven and broiler. I also added Renogy 100 watt solar panel on the cabin roof with a 20 amp controller inside the cabin. This keeps all batteries fully charged all the time, even on cloudy days. I added a waterproof usb charging station on the cockpit binnacle for keeping my iPad charged while navigating using Navionics. Brand new Furuno DRS4W wireless radar installed in summer 2022 as well.
This schooner is in great sailing condition and sails very well with no bad habits. She weighs 10 tons and cruises under sail in the 5-7 knot range.
Pegasus has a 3 cylinder 20 HP Yanmar diesel engine and consumes approximately 1.5 gallons per hour while cruising under power at 6-7 knots. Very economic to operate under power. Engine has just over over 300 hours.
Pegasus has been set up by the previous owner with all lines coming back to the cockpit while sailing. Once the sails are hoisted everything is controlled in the cockpit while staying nice and dry. This schooner is unique in that she can be sailed single handed which I have done many times. No vices. No bad habits. It’s like sailing a 42 foot wayfarer instead of a 10 ton schooner!!
All lines are a synthetic 3 strand line and are easy on the hands, no gloves required. Has two anchors one being the traditional fisherman anchor on deck. LED mast lights bring the entire schooner to life at night for any deck work required. Vintage brass compass can be removed from the binnacle and replaced with a cockpit table for outside dining. VHF radio onboard and safety flairs were bought new in 2022. Manual head with sink and running water. V berth in the bow and two single berths in the salon area when not used for dining.
The maintenance on this schooner is minimal only requiring a small amount of brightwork on the boat, the remainder has been completed with paint on the deck, salon and hull.
Full set of 5 tanbark sails made by Michelle Steven’s of Bluenose II fame. Sail bags for winter storage and tanbark sail covers for the summer. Bronze Columbia steering box and brass ships wheel in the cockpit.
Beautiful traditional boat that has been updated to require less maintenance, less crew and more time on the water. Includes classic wooden punt with two sets of oars and small outboard motor.
I have many more photos of the schooner exterior and interior if you are interested.
2022 survey completed by ex Bluenose II skipper available to serious inquiries.
