Looking for new dragon boaters!
Description
We’re looking to add a few more people to our mixed crew Paddlers of the Fifth Moon and women’s crew Snappin’ Dragons to make sure we’re covered for all races. Both teams are competitively minded rec crews - we don’t time trial or cut people from rosters but we do expect everyone to show up and work on their technique/fitness to get the boats moving as fast as possible.
No experience is necessary, in fact sometimes it’s a bonus as you won’t have any bad habits to unlearn! You must be fit, reliable, committed, driven and a team player. We usually aim to recruit people under 50 to avoid competing with the many 50+ teams for recruitment but the right fit will not be turned away due to age.
We pride ourselves in having inclusive and supportive boats that don’t tolerate the inherent drama that sometimes comes with team sports.
Our coach has over 20 years experience and is currently the head coach for the Canadian National ParaDragon team. You will receive solid technical instruction and train both sides to avoid injury. There are also a variety of cross-training options available to anyone interested.
Both teams are training now to the end of August at the Fairway Gorge Paddling Club.
Snappin’ Dragons team fees are $200 plus team shirt, practices are 5:30-7pm Tues/Thurs
Paddlers of the Fifth Moon fees are $200, practices are 7-8:30pm Tues/Thurs
Races are Nanaimo (Jul 8-9), Victoria (Aug12-13) and Vancouver Island ( Aug 26-27). If you need to miss a festival, not the end of the world if we know early!
If you’d like to check it out for free or would like more information, contact us and we’ll get you out as soon as the season starts. You have absolutely nothing to lose in trying it and could end up finding a new passion! We don’t pressure people to join if it's not their thing as clearly that wouldn’t benefit anyone!
We’re also hoping to add a para-dragon team to the family in 2024. This will include people with physical, sensory, neurological, developmental, and psychological conditions along with supporters. If you’re interested in helping to build this team or know someone that would be please get in touch. We were aiming to start it this season but with our coach committed to the National Team program this year it was a bit much! Doesn’t mean we can’t get the ball rolling though!
