Building care team for a young woman in wheelchair
Description
My name is Helen, I’m a young woman with Muscular Dystrophy (specifically Spinal Muscular Atrophy) starting my PhD at UBC in September. I use an electric wheelchair.
I’m looking to build a team of part-time and full-time personal care aides (PCAs) starting in mid-July - August. Previous experience is not required as I’m happy to provide training. Potentially a perfect fit for students!
I’m open to hiring any shift times as long as it’s a good fit, so feel free to throw your hat in the ring! There is the possibility of picking up extra shifts.
About the Job:
I am currently hiring for both day shifts and overnight shifts. As you can imagine, it may be hard to fully describe the position but regular duties will include:
Day Shifts
- assistance with personal care routine, getting up/ready in the morning (toileting, dressing, washing face, etc.)
- transferring between wheelchair and bed (both manual lift and Hoyer lift possible)
- positioning, and light household chores (i.e., dishes, tidying up)
- assistance with meals, snacks, and drinks
- accompanying me to UBC campus
- assistance with note-taking, computers, and classroom equipment
- navigating between buildings on campus
- accompaniment to appointments, errands, and outings
- etc
Dayshift rate is $20-$24 per hour depending on experience.
Overnight Shifts
- assistance with personal care routine, getting ready at night for bed (toileting, dressing, washing face, etc.)
- transferring between wheelchair and bed (both manual lift and Hoyer lift possible)
- light household chores (i.e., dishes, tidying up)
- positioning a couple times (typically 1-3) a night (~3 minutes each)
- etc
** Please note that overnight shifts are sleep shifts, not awake shifts. My overnight needs are generally minimal, and my current workers usually sleep through most or all of the night. This position is ideal for students or people with other full-time/part-time employment. Currently, both my overnight workers also have day jobs and do this as a side hustle! **
Overnight rate is approximately $150 per shift.
—--------------------
As I'm entering into a new program, I'm not sure what my daily routine will look like yet. However, it's likely that during the day, I will need to be accompanied to campus. Oftentimes, there is downtime while I work or relax (interspersed with helping me eat snacks and drink coffee) which is perfect for you to chill or do your own work/hobbies! I've had aides read, play video games, bring puzzles or other crafts and activities. On other days I may also need accompaniment to appointments, or on city adventures!
------------------
About You:
I’m looking for someone reliable, responsible, and fun! Long story short, I'm looking for someone to be my arms and legs!
Most importantly, I need someone who is punctual, reliable, and understands the trust needed to build a strong caregiver/client relationship. As my life is on the line, it is paramount that you show up consistently for scheduled shifts and can commit to fulfilling the tasks required.
A valid driver’s license is strongly preferred.
-----------------
About Myself:
As an introduction to me as a person, I think I’m very laid back and easygoing. I spend most days working/studying, doing my silly little hobbies, and will go out on trips to the office/new restaurants/movies etc. I love movies, binge-worthy TV, good books, long walks, and finding great food spots. I’m happy to chat or just hang out!

If you are interested, please fill out this Google Form: https://forms.gle/9YjRrxTYa3SNvbHy5. If you have questions please reach out to me! My current aides are also happy to chat if you have questions specifically for them. We can set up a video call interview. Looking forward to hearing from you!
