From nighttime displays to unusual phenomena, the skies over Canada give us plenty of reasons to look up in awe. Our three-coin Sky Wonders series re-creates some of nature’s optical illusions by mixing colour and different lighting technologies. Beginning with a blacklight-activated fire rainbow, each of these three coins is a puresilver snapshot of a naturally occurring phenomenon that is colourful, rare… and completely spellbinding.
A rainbow is welcome after any rainstorm. But in Canada, a more unusual sight in the sky is a fire rainbow... which isn't a rainbow at all! The unusual band of colours blazes across the summer sky on this coin, where our version of the optical illusion is amplified by a blacklight-activated effect.
This rare halo takes the form of a wispy, rainbow-coloured cloud or band in the sky. Unlike a true rainbow, a fire rainbow requires no rain; instead, the fair-weather phenomenon appears when the sunhangs high in the sky and the cirrus clouds align. When light passes through these high-altitude clouds, it is refracted by plate ice crystals within. These crystals act like tiny suspended prisms that produce the curious rainbow pattern seen on this coin.

In the heart of our nation’s capital, the hallowed walls of Parliament are home to thousands of carved and sculpted artworks of exceptional beauty. The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to showcase some of the many delights that grace these spaces with this three-coin series featuring carvings inspired by the sculptural art of Parliament.
Coin No. 1: Grotesque Wild Green Man
This $25 coin is 99.99% pure silver, with a diameter of 36 millimetres and a nominal metal weight of 30.75 grams. Engraved in ultra-high relief, the coin features an original depiction by Dominion Sculptor Phil White of a Gothic-style grotesque inspired by a carving found on the East Block of the Parliament Buildings. The image portrays the mythical Wild Green Man. The fierce figure’s foliate hair, brows, moustache, and beard dominate its face along with wide staring eyes and bared teeth. This expressive image seems to emerge from the coin face thanks to detailed engraving in ultra-high relief.
Coin No. 2: Grotesque Foliated Green Man
Engraved in ultra-high relief, the coin features an original depiction by Dominion Sculptor Phil White of a Gothic-style grotesque interpreted from a carving found on the East Block of the Parliament Buildings. The image portrays a Green man disgorging stylized “stiff-leaf” foliage from its mouth. The staring figure’s brows and hair are also composed of whirling, stylized leaves and stems.
Coin No. 3: Grotesque Horned Green ManEngraved in ultra-high relief, the reverse features an original depiction by Dominion Sculptor Phil White of a Gothic-style grotesque interpreted from a carving found on the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings. The humorous, slightly unsettling horned Green Man sticks out his tongue, his grimacing mouth topped with a jaunty moustache. His face is encircled by stylized foliage and his deep-set eyes peer from below heavy brows. Two small goat-like horns curl out from his forehead. ITEM SPECIFACTIONS Diameter: 36 mm

Celebrate the legacy of the Voyageur Dollar and its artist!
The quintessential Canadian collector coin has been renewed, honouring yesterday’s artistry and today’s engraving techniques. Crafted in 99.99% pure silver, this kilo coin pays tribute toboth the Voyageur Dollar and its artist, Emanuel Hahn
His nostalgic image of Canada is given a place of honour on this stunning coin. But instead of re-creating the design previously featured on Canadian dollar coins (1935-1986), we went back to Hahn’s concept drawings to bring his artistic vision to life, with all its nuanced details, and on a much larger fine silver canvas than he could have ever imagined.
“Emanuel Hahn’s classic design has a timeless quality and represents the best of Canada: its people, its endless potential, the unbelievable beauty of its landscapes and the vastness of the North symbolized by the rays of the aurora borealis…” Masters Club Member: Mr. Bernie Torbik
This is Canadian artistry at its finest. Order your silver Voyageur kilo coin today!

2009 Canada King Edward VIII Copper High Relief Antique Finish Medallion
Canada did not always produce its coins domestically. Until the Royal Canadian Mint opened in 1908, Canadian coins were imported from overseas. Even then, the designs and tools remained the domain of the Royal Mint in London while the Canadian facility operated as its Ottawa branch. This began to change in 1930 when the Mint became a wholly owned Canadian institution.
The reverse shows the uncrowned effigy of Edward VIII who was king of Britain from January 20 to December 11, 1936. When he acceded to the throne in January, preparations for new coins bearing his effigy began, but Edward VIII abdicated before the production tools for all the coins to be issued in Britain and its colonies were completed. Hence, this particular effigy never entered circulation in Canada. The effigy itself is in ultra high relief which is reminiscent of ancient medallic art.
Specifications:
Item number: 107169

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Laurie McGaw, your coin offers a beautifully detailed and engraved side-profile portrait of Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae as he composes his famous poem, In FlandersFields. There, on the battlefields near the Belgian town of Ypres, a uniformed McCrae is seated with pen and paper in hand, using his elevatedthigh as a writing surface. He appears deep in thought and fixed upon the task at hand; in the background to the right of McCrae, an ambulance truck is parked before a field tent—a reminder of McCrae's medical role with the Canadian brigade during the First World War. A more haunting sight tothe left and behind McCrae is the landscape covered with makeshift graves for the fallen soldiers; this, together with the showy poppies that can be seenalong the left edge of the image field, inspired the lines “In Flanders Fields, the poppiesblow/ Between the crosses, row on row,/ That mark our place…” Also engraved alongthe edge of the image field is the word “CANADA,” the commemorative dates “1915-2015” to mark the poem's centennial, the face value “3 DOLLARS” and the poem's English and French title. The obverse features the effigy of King George V by Sir Edward B. MacKennal, as used on Canadian coins inthe First World War period.

Did you know?
The sun must be high in the sky – higher than 58 degrees above the horizon – to produce a fire rainbow effect. Because of this, the phenomenon isvery rare occurrence north of the 55th parallel andsouth of the equator, although the odds of seeing one in Canada are greater during the mid-summer months.
Within the cirrus clouds, the hexagonal plate ice crystals must also be aligned with their faces parallelto the ground in order to create the rainbow-like optical illusion.First Coin Design:
Designed by Tony Bianco, the first coin in the series features an engraved lakeside setting on a mid-summer day. Rolling hills rise up towards the colour portion of the design, where the sun hangs high inthe blue-coloured sky. Sunlight passing though the cirrus clouds produces a spectrum-coloured band known as a fire rainbow, which is enhanced by a blacklight-activated effect. The obverse features the effigyof Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
