I want to mention that I am offering a FREE singing assessment, where I can listen to your voice and pitch, and then discuss how we would go about improving your ability to sing.
What makes the way I teach singing different?
I have worked as a full-time professional singer all of my adult life, singing countless live gigs, National US/Canada tours, concerts, and shows, also studio recordings/TV/film. I have also sung most styles of music professionally, from Top-40 Pop music with live cover bands, to R&B and rock, to vocal quartets, light-classical, choral, musical theatre, jazz, swing, Big Band and many other styles. I didn’t set out to sing all those different styles, it just happened naturally as I was hired on gigs over the years, and I enjoyed the challenge and fun of doing different things musically and vocally.
I have trained formally with some of the top singing and voice teachers in Canada and the US, at the Banff School Of Fine Arts, St. FX University Jazz, Seth Riggs speech level singing training, Royal Conservatory and many workshops and seminars, but at the same time have worked with many amazing professional ‘untrained natural’ singers so I have learned the best of both worlds.
What makes my method unique, is that it is based on finding and freeing your own Natural Voice. Without knowing it, most singers imitate singers they hear on recordings, and that can be in any style from pop to classical or rock. But when a singer only imitates others, then their true natural voice is not able emerge, so it will hold you back. Over the years I have learned and developed very specific and rapid techniques to release your own unique voice, unlearn bad vocal habits, and develop the natural vocal strength, flexibility, range and power in your voice. Sometimes you can add many notes to your voice in one session, but of course it takes practice to develop those notes fully. Then once you have found your natural voice, you can still have fun singing different styles of music, but with a solid healthy technique, that will last your entire life.
And putting aside the purely technical side for a moment, what about the artistic and emotional expression of singing? Sometimes when we start to learn more of the technical aspects of singing, we can forget that the entire point of singing is the emotional/artistic expression of music and singing to an audience, and having the people who are sitting there listening you sing have a great time grooving to the music! And yes, even the creative and emotional aspects of singing can be developed and improved in natural and genuine ways.
Some of the areas we will work on are: [of course depending on your unique goals]
• Breathing techniques, abdominal breath support.
• Physical relaxation techniques
• Voicercises to open the ‘vocal mask’ and Vocal Yoga to relax the voice.
• the advanced Deep Yawn technique
• study of Seth Riggs speech level singing training.
• opening up the full range of your voice by connecting to your natural voice projection,
• how to sing a melody (legato, musical tone, phrasing, expression, styles)
• working with vowels and resonance.
• scales for vocal flexibility and pitch-training,
• audition preparations for performing arts schools like Westmount Collegiate, Cardinal Carter, Claude Watson School for the Arts.
• Audition preparations for jazz/commercial vocal programs in colleges and universities like Humber, York and U of T.
• preparation for graded Royal Conservatory RCM Examinations.
• using new Smartphone Apps for ear-training to sing in-tune.
• live performance training, interpreting lyrics,
• improvising fancy singing ‘riffs’ like the pro’s, how to sing harmonies, Studio singing techniques
• dynamic stage presence, speaking/interacting with the audience with confidence and overcoming stage-fright,
• using film acting techniques and visualization techniques to enhance performance, and many others.
• Microphone technique, how to use a mixer.
Update! I am now involved in designing a free App for singers ear-training called “Voice Training – Learn To Sing”. You can view my tutorial video for the App here.

The App can be downloaded free from Google Play

Of course the most important thing, is that I will listen very carefully to your individual voice, and work from where you are in your vocal development.
I’ve worked with singers at all levels, from teens who enjoy singing, to working professionals, and also beginners of all ages, which can be very rewarding due to the rapid progress a beginner can make. So age or experience doesn’t matter, as beyond good natural technique, singing is meant to be fun and express music, and in fact the more you enjoy singing, the better singer you will be!
I will create for you a specific series of exercises for you to practice each day, if you are just starting then 15 minutes a day is enough, but as you progress you can work up to 1 hour or more each day. The story is true…how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice!
We will also pick songs that suit your voice, and work on finished public song performance, or prepare for auditions or RCM Examinations, so you can actually get up in front of people and…SING!
I am offering a vocal assessment, (about 15 min or longer if there is time), where we can say hi, I can listen to your singing voice and your pitch, and show you what we can work on together, as well as answer any questions you might have.
So if you are interested, check out a session, to see if it makes sense to you.
All the best, and keep singing!
Please email me if you have any questions, and I can give you a phone call or Zoom call, and have a chat.
