Learning To Drive (Theory)
Learning To Drive Courses provide an orderly set of lessons to prepare students with the knowledge needed to start their journey in the wonderful world of Driving a Horse.
These courses are designed by Certified Equestrian Canada Coaches and are meant to be used as a continuing Equestrian educational resource.

GETTING STARTED
The purpose of the courses is to help the novice Driver develop a good sense of basic safety requirements while handling a horse, this course includes such topics as:
•Learn the major parts of the horse,
•Develop good grooming habits,
•Leg protection,
•Arena safety,
•Parts of the harness,
•Types of harnesses,
•Fitting & adjusting a harness
•Bits and their functions,
•Leg protection,
•Lunge a horse with side reins,
•Ground driving and equipment used.
The Getting Started Course will be of interest to anyone wishing to learn safe horsemanship practices, with the first stages of learning to drive a horse.
HITCHING UP
The purpose of the course is to teach the driver a safe method of putting the horse to the carriage with the assistance of a header/safety person and to become familiar with the two basic types of carriages/carts and their uses.
By the end of this course, the Driver will be able to understand the theory of:
•Lungeing, ground driving,
•Training a horse to pull weight
•Aids used for driving
•Reinmanship, two-handed, one-handed
•How to build & use a reinboard
•Types of vehicles: parts of the vehicle, capacity, and balance
•Hitching and unhitching
•Understand transitions, at a walk and halt.
•Understand the principles of developing correct bend.
•Understand basic ring work which includes; the layout and lettering of a dressage ring, change rein, and appropriate aids for the rein back.
Questions at the end of each lesson to help students identify what they know and a Certificate Of Achievement is generated on the Students Dashboard.
