Facts about Southampton:
The village of Southampton in Saugeen Shores, is located at the mouth of the beautiful Saugeen river and is the oldest port in Bruce County. There is lots to do along the river and on the lake from swimming to fishing and canoeing and kayaking and paddleboarding. There are numerous points of entry to the Saugeen river from Southampton and all along the villages surrounding Southampton.
There is an incredible marine history here dating back to the 1800s which you can learn about by viewing the posts along the boardwalk or visiting the Bruce County Museum located in Southampton. The Chantry Island lighthouse and keeper's cottage are visible from South Street beach and all along the boardwalk from the main beach in downtown Southampton. Chantry Island is a federal bird sanctuary but can be accessed during the summer until mid September by the Marine Heritage Society. Enjoy walking or fishing on the large pier where the main lighthouse is located at the mouth of the river. The lands are part of the traditional Saugeen Ojibway Nation Territory. The first colonial settlement occurred in 1848 by Capt. John Spence and William Kennedy who named Southampton after its namesake town in England. The Saugeen Rail Trail (which is a walking and biking trail) connects Southampton and Port Elgin and is directly accessible from the cottage (it forms one of the boundaries of the cottage). The trail also connects to the 80 kilometre long Bruce County Trail Network which leads to towns such as Paisley, Walkerton, Mildmay and Kincardine. There are great, upscale eating and shopping experiences to be had along the main street in Southampton as well as more moderately priced restaurants for the whole family to enjoy. View the stately Victorian homes near the cenotaph in downtown Southampton now operating as bed and breakfasts or are privately owned homes. There are wonderful golf courses which can be enjoyed by all such as the Saugeen Golf Club. Play a round of golf or simply enjoy a meal on the patio. The Saugeen Golf Club and restaurant are a short 2 minute car ride away.
