Please make public SJ community gardens' soil test results
Description
Following the AIM Recycling industrial fire in Sept, the provincial government undertook soil testing in 12 community gardens in SJ. Quoting Minister Fleming, "The testing was conducted for a variety of metals and chemicals that might be expected to be found following the fire and does not suggest that soil quality was affected to the extent that it would be of concern for people's health. WHILE ONE OR MORE LEVELS WAS HIGHER THAN EXPECTED AT FOUR OF THE TWELVE SITES, those are not believed to be related to the fire but will of course be further investigated." Begin watching at 34:31 on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg4iasIsHQI In the same video, Minister Fleming also said that the provincial government would be sharing soil test results directly with community garden leaders, but only directed the general public to this guide for growing vegetables in potentially polluted soil: https://www2.gnb.ca/content/dam/gnb/Departments/h-s/pdf/en/HealthyEnvironments/Food/growing-garden-edibles-guide-en.pdf
The general public works, plays and gardens in the same neighbourhoods where the 12 community gardens are located. The general public has a right to know all test results for all 12 community gardens so the public can make informed decisions on whether or not to garden, and also, whether or not to allow children to play on potentially contaminated Saint John soils, beaches, etc.
If you have test results, please share them on facebook or other social media. It is the right thing to do. Thanks.
