Volunteer Opportunity in Ecological Restoration
Description
We are landowners of a small acreage that is environmentally protected. It will never be developed and therefore is particularly important for naturalizing. Unfortunately, this land has been infested with European buckthorn and this shrub is choking out all the native shrubs and trees that should be there to support our insects, birds, animals etc. My partner and I have been working hard to "unchoke" the habitat and we've managed to make a start on removing the large buckthorn and plant native trees on a section of the property. Of course, there are young buckthorn seedlings (and a seed bank too), which also needs attention. We are looking for support in the removal of the very small shrubs and seedlings. It would be a bit like weeding a garden -- you would learn to identify what needs to come out and (if you're so inclined ;)), their removal would be very satisfying. I would, of course, provide the training and you could do as little or as much as you like. A very good time of the year to perform this work is in the fall. I've attached some photos to show you what the property looks like. We are located close to Fergus not very far from the Cataract trail.
