The Pioneer 3 was constructed in 1956 and its engine was replaced in 1979. It has been maintained in very good condition and has been registered and maintained to Transport Canada standards as a Ferry (commercial passenger vessel) for its entire life. Since being launched, it has served as a passenger and freight transport vessel on the sheltered waters of Shoal Lake, Ontario.

The vessel features a covered bow area with seating and lighting. The wheelhouse is completely covered and has lighting, and the drivers and rear window can be opened. The engine room is located below the wheelhouse. The rear hold is approximately 5 feet deep, 22 feet long and 12 feet wide at the widest point. It can be covered with a rubberized cover during rain and storms.
Three bilge pumps are installed (bow, engine room and stern hold), complete with a high bilge water alarm system with zone indication. Anchor, bell, horn and navigation lights are all tested and completely operational.
The hull is of extremely sound construction and can easily withstand freezing in-place in the ice over the winter (see pictures). Thus, it does not need to be removed over winter.
