Assassin Snails
Description
Snail over population problem? Assassin snails (Clea helena) are a chemical-free solution. They eat snail, snail eggs and tend to leave larger snails alone. Plant safe! Our Assassin colony share a tank with a thriving shrimp (neocaridina) colony and the snails do not appear to interfere with healthy shrimp/shrimplets. Assassins have been reported to also predate on planaria flat worms. Assassin snails grow to 1 - 1.5 inches and tend not to over populate because they;
1) lay low numbers of eggs, that take up to 8 weeks to hatch
2) are very slow to mature (6 months),
3) they have a lifespan of 1 -2 years.
Once your pest snail numbers are low assassins will eat fish food and stop reproducing. Unlike most snails, they are not hermaphroditic and require a male and a female to reproduce. Since the males and females look identical you will need to acquire 6 or more to statistically assure getting at least one pair to maintain an assassin presence long term...
$10 for 3 (min), $15 for 6. about 1/2 inch in size.
