Big husband horse type Belgian
Description
Meet Gloria
16hh Belgian cross mare, estimated to be early-mid teens. Gloria has been here just over two weeks and progressing nicely. She arrived halter broke but quiet. At this time Gloria could use some more weight/muscle/top line to help her look her very best. She had been a broodmare prior to us getting her so hasn’t done much work in her life that we know of. Along with that her coat isn’t as nice as my blanketed, supplement getting show horses, so she will take a bit of time to get her to look razzle dazzle but her quiet personality makes up for her looks. She does have an edema under her belly (sort back middle, not near girth area), this is just like a pocket of fluid, some broodmares get from having babies and not worked a ton. A past horse of ours had one and it did eventually go away/become a bit smaller, it doesn’t affect her at all and isn’t really that noticeable unless you feel for it! She is a very slow moving, not in any rush kind of horse, this includes leading her in from the field and riding wise! Gloria is good in the crossties and stands pretty quietly to be groomed and tacked, she needs work picking up her feet, she doesn’t try to kick or anything it’s just like trying to get an elephant to pick up their leg (we’re like 5 ft nothing so it’s not really a fair match). The farrier came out last week to do her feet, she wasn’t perfect as she didn’t want to hold her legs up super long but the farrier took their time and got them done. She is progressing quickly with this and I think if continued to work on it she will be fine with time. Gloria is super quiet to ride, she is good at the mounting block and has ridden English and western (primarily English though). Gloria is all whoa and not much go. She walk/trots well and relatively easily (with leg and crop), she does canter but good luck trying to get her to go that fast, we can get her to canter a bit if someone on the ground has a lunge whip to help send her forward, she hasn’t shown any naughtiness at the canter (don’t worry I don’t think she’ll ever take off). We have popped her over a crossrail and although she won’t be your next Olympic mount she did go over it easy enough. Gloria is super tolerant and isn’t phased by much, she really just wants to plod along quietly. I have used her with a confident adult beginner and she was super good, very lazy and I on the ground had to use the lunge whip to keep her trotting but no silliness when the rider got unbalanced or anything like that. We hacked her out and she was great, we don’t have actual trails so we just road hack but she was fabulous. The worst she did was need a bit extra help steering as she would drift into the neighbours field a bit, but didn’t care about cars passing or anything! This mare is the perfect contender to be a husband/wife/weekend warrior horse. Gloria is a super quiet (and lazy) mare that will be adored wherever she ends up!
