Our Team
Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey's Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.
The Project Execution Team in Voisey's Bay is responsible for the safe execution of CAPEX and OPEX projects. The projects are multidisciplinary and located in various areas of the site, both surface and underground. Employing project management methods, the team is motivated to manage projects on the principles of safe delivery and commitments to cost, schedule, risk management and environmental management. The team's goal is to deliver all commitments to key stakeholders while being leaders in safety and risk management. The team's expectations are that all execution contractors also hold themselves to these principles. The project execution team recognizes that its employees are its greatest asset. The Opportunity
Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey's Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.
Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.
We are currently seeking a Lead, Project & Shutdown Management to join our VNL Project Execution department in Voisey's Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.
This position is based at the Voisey's Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation.
The Project & Shutdown Management Lead will lead projects ($10-15M annually) assigned by Project & Shutdown Superintendent including the management and co-ordination of all activities from FEL 1 studies through AFE approval, execution and handover to the Project Owner. This includes management of detailed engineering design, procurement, project controls (Safety, Scope, Schedule, Quality, Cost), systems, construction support and management services for individua. Projects. They will execute work using project management framework in a streamlined and effective manner and work in partnership with respective operations and support areas (reliability, engineering, environmental, legal, procurement etc.) to ensure efficient and safe execution of scope, schedule, budget and quality. To assist in the requisitioning of parts & services associated with the Project, as well as to create work orders, operations and manage the Schedule associated with Project and Shutdown work in SAP. This includes collaborating with relevant site schedulers to ensure work is integrated into the 7/21 schedule and major events calendar. They will also work with Site operational planning teams to create the Master Schedule for the Plant shutdowns.
Additionally, in this position you will:
- Execute approved Capital, Operating, and Period projects and shutdowns from FEL 1 through final execution including related commissioning/operational readiness. (12–24-month horizon).
- Supervise Vale employees, construction coordination and technical support personnel required to provide project support during project execution.
- Integrate work execution with Project Engineer(s) and Project Controls Coordinator(s) in line with optimized project and shutdown processes.
- Work with Site operational planning teams to create the Master Schedule for the Plant shutdowns.
Safety
- Lead PHRs, JHAs, MOCs, Lift Plans and manage the Project Risk registry as required for the safe execution of the project.
- Monitor and audit compliance to the safety controls, Project Safety Plan and other Vale Standards.
- Ensure adequate supervision is always provided when execution work is occurring.
- Enter and manage I.M.s as required to document safety incidents, conditions, and near misses through the course of the Project (i.e., Norcat Indoctrinations, ZES, etc.).
- Supervise the safe execution of field project work (executed by external or internal resources) as required.
- Develop and implement project safety strategies.
Scope
- Develop and/or coordinate the project charter and the scope of work, work design planning and the execution phase of projects as assigned (Capital, Operating and Planned Maintenance Period).
- Create work methodology for Risk Assessments (PHRs or JHAs).
- Provide construction coordination for Capital and Operating project and coordinate service contractor work.
- Create and manage Field Work Instructions and Contract Change Orders
- Coordinate and resolve contract issues with support from peers, Engineering, Contract Management Office, Safety Supervisors and Procurement.
- Manage contractor Lenel and gate access process for all contracts.
- Manage and monitor contractor work approvals, site access, quality, efficiency, qualifications, and safety.
- Create operations, identifying resources and durations as required to adequately manage the project in SAP.
- Confirm time on operations as they are executed in order to monitor progress and supervise project work (executed by external or internal resources) as required.
Schedule
- Manage schedule adherence, slippage, and mitigation actions.
- Routinely forecast adherence to schedule, critical path, slippage, and actions being taken to meet milestones and final completion date.
- Provide detailed Work Designs (task, JHA's, materials) to adequately plan and schedule the work in SAP.
- Lead the development of Shutdown Schedules incorporating all work to be performed during a shutdown, coordinating all site activities.
Quality
- Ensure adequate contractor audits for quality, qualifications, compliance, invoice auditing.
- Perform regular field visits to ensure compliance to commissioning, quality, and operational readiness processes.
- Perform field visits as required to confirm adherence to project schedules and progress payments.
- TECO orders at project completion once final confirmations, requisitions, reservations are complete.
Cost
- Supply required information, co-ordinate and monitor funding request packages (AFE/APC/PCR) and follow asset capitalization process.
- Manage, monitor, and report on project/shutdown cost, cash forecasting and Variance.
- Review and approve Requisitions for services and Service Entry Sheets related to projects.
- Audit invoices and confirm adherence to contract requirements.
- Liaise with Service Procurement Group while managing requisitions and performing technical and commercial evaluations.
- Liaise with Contract Management Office during continuous service contract scope development.
- Provide updates to Project Controls Coordinator and Superintendent on additional tasks required (Field Work Instructions-FWI) and Contract Change Orders (CCO).
- Ensure project and contract cost estimates are properly calibrated against other projects and contracts, verify that the planned costs in SAP are aligned with estimated project cost.
About You
Education:
- Degree in Engineering or Technical diploma with Professional Technologist Designation.
- P. Eng designation is preferred but not required.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) is an asset.
Experience & Skills:
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in project management related role. Experience in a mining environment preferred.
- Work experience in Tailings and Dams Management preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of VPS Technical, project management principles and strategies and strong project management skills is preferred.
