Usable Antique Side-delivery Hay Rake
Description
This is a ground-driven side-delivery hay rake. I believe it was made in the 1920s. I think it was built for use with a tractor, as there is no seat on it. We were planning to farm with draft horses and were collecting the necessary implements, but then our plans changed. I was planning to add a seat and foot platform to make it usable with horses. Or you could use a forecart.
One of the control handles is bent, but it’s flatbar and would be quite easy to straighten. If this were fixed and it was lubricated, I think it would be ready to use. The only other issue that I know of is a collar (on the main axle, just inside the frame on the left side) that is wired together (see last photo).
The original tongue mount was missing when we got it, so we had a local fabricator make one. It is designed to accept a short wood tongue for use with a tractor, or a long pole for use with a team (and has the bracket for the evener built in).
It would rake about a 9-foot path
We hauled it here on a 16 foot flatdeck trailer, with the rake sitting diagonally. I can help load it with my tractor loader.
Sorry for the haywire blotchy colour in some parts of the photos – my camera was dying.
Call Loran at two, five, zero - three, six, six - four, three, two, one (landline, so NO texts please). Be sure and leave a message if I'm out. If you don’t hear back from me within a day or so, call again as my answering machine will eat messages if there’s a power outage.
Note: Although the Kijiji address says Argenta, I am actually in Johnson's Landing.
