Looking for a compassionate PSW (personal support worker)
Description
We are seeking Personal Support Workers (PSWs) to provide care for our beloved sister Maria, who lives with quadriplegic cerebral palsy and dystonia. Although she has limited verbal abilities, Maria possesses full mental capacity. She experiences challenges with anxiety and pain, which can lead to severe muscle spasms due to her dystonia. Maria receives nutrition through a g-tube but can also eat and drink orally when she is able. Despite her physical limitations, Maria has a captivating smile and enjoys engaging in conversations, reading, and participating in small crafts when possible.
Maria resides in Norwich, occupying a suite within the Stillwaters Retirement Community. While we already have a dedicated team of PSWs who provide care for Maria, we are searching for additional compassionate individuals who are comfortable handling the intensity of her care and possess experience in palliative care. Over the past year, Maria has had multiple hospital stays, requiring caregivers who are willing to accompany her during these visits. Due to her speech limitations, Maria cannot be left unattended, necessitating constant supervision. Thus, prospective candidates must be willing to commute to Norwich, Woodstock, and potentially London Hospitals.
A successful applicant must bring:
1. At least 1 year of experience and expertise in PSW or related healthcare fields, preferably with palliative care experience.
2. The applicant should be capable of providing compassionate support to Maria during episodes of pain, implementing effective pain management techniques.
3. Strong communication skills and a willingness to collaborate within an existing team of PSWs and healthcare professionals.
4. A willingness to be proactive in advocating for Maria's needs in hospital settings to ensure optimal care.
5. Physical stamina for assisting with mobility and managing muscle spasms.
6. Reliability and dependability for consistent caregiving and a willingness to travel to Norwich, Woodstock, and potentially London Hospitals.
7. The applicant must deeply value and honor every individual's life, including Maria's, ensuring care that promotes her well-being and dignity.
Additional details:
1. Training will be provided. Maria's current PSWs are experienced and willing to train you. You will have the opportunity to shadow with them until you feel confident in caring for Maria on your own.
2. Scheduling is flexible: day shifts, evening shifts and weekend shifts available. From $24.00 per hour.
3. Shifts are approximately 6 hours in length.
4. Working some weekend and evening shifts is required (daytime care only, no overnight care)
5. PPE or vaccinations are not required. When working at the hospital you may be required to adhere to other requirements.
6. We use the app Signal to communicate between PSWs about important details regarding Maria's care.
Benefits:
1. Fulfilling and rewarding work: You’ll be making a positive impact on Maria's life, providing a sense of purpose and satisfaction, reducing her pain and anxiety, and contributing to her overall well-being.
2. Meaningful connections: You’ll be building relationships with other PSWs and forming a bond with Maria, fostering a sense of connection and friendship.
3. Varied work environment: You’ll be able to assist Maria in different settings, keeping the work dynamic and interesting. Casual dress is also permitted.
