Highly loved male Blue Heeler, 5 years old from one family home
Description
We've had our loving dog since he was an 8 week old puppy and he is very protective and attached to his people, his pack. We live in North Vancouver in a home backing onto a forest. However, this year my husband has become ill, coupled with my recent back surgery has contributed to making it too stressful for keeping our beloved dog, a 5 year old male, 50 pound pure breed Blue Heeler.
He is best suited in a home with easy access to a yard, or ideally a farm as he loves to work, where he can guard livestock, animals, (herding) or persons who need some protection or company. He would never run off, even off leash, always sticks close to his people. He guards people and property by natural instinct. He loves to walk in the forest on or off leash, or best is an open field. Extremely healthy and loves to catch a ball and run for it, very agile, jumping very high for the ball when thrown in the air.
Loving buddy that also likes to snuggle close my legs when sleeping. He's a playful, but does guard me, but not others, I seem to be his job of protecting which has added to the stress of keeping him since I cannot easily walk with him while encountering other people. This has become too stressful for me.
He has spent weeks at a time in another persons home when we took holidays (my dog walker). After a few days, he becomes attached to the new person. And happy and playful. So, for this reason, I believe it is for the best (his health and happiness, as well as my family) to find him a better living situation, one where he can be a little more in open outdoor spaces, a nice home with some acreage.
He does certain commands like: sit, lie down, wait, likes to be bathed, and have his belly rubbed. Understands many, many words. Sometimes I think he knows full sentences! Extremely smart, loving to his people, and very food motivated! We often spell the words so he doesn't know what we are saying, especially if it involves the word 'park'. This is a very smart breed, and an active breed, one that needs a job ideally or stimulation or an active person. As well, he doesn’t like to be left alone for longer than 4 hours, absolutely prefers to be around people.
A real, solid companion.
I have to put the needs of my husband first right now, who cannot walk him anymore as he has a disease impacting his ability to walk properly. We have many treatments to undergo and it is too stressful to manage an active dog with this new health challenge and diagnosis.
Anyone who loves dogs will fall in love this adult Heeler boy! We are not in a hurry to re-home him, and are very selective with where he goes to ensure it is a good fit, such a farm close to Vancouver or Hope, or home with a large backyard. Ideally, we would like visiting rights a couple of times a year, like extended family, buy only if this is a positive experience for everyone.
