Long Time or Past Residents of Sydney Area
Description
I am an independent filmmaker and artist looking to speak with long term residents, or past residents, of the Sydney area. I am currently working short film about Cape Breton Island. People who have moved away from the area are still of interest, though I am most interested in those who were born and raised. Looking for people of all ages. I will be traveling to the Sydney area in the spring, likely mid-March or May, to record in-person interviews and footage. At this time, I do not have enough funding confirmed to compensate participants. However, I am still trying to arrange this and so I will be able to confirm this closer to the travel date.
I am a woman currently working as an artist and part time professor at a college in Massachusetts. My mother was raised in Sydney and I spent my summers there as a child. I still try to return to parts of Nova Scotia today, but this project is focusing on the history of the Sydney region. These interviews will help to expand my own narrative of this place and its identity, and also function as footage for the film itself. I will also be documenting footage of Sydney and surrounding areas including the sites of the Sydney Steel Corporation and the Sydney Tar Ponds, and potential locations such as the Holy Angels Convent, the Whitney Pier, and The Cape Breton Highlands National Park. So much of the history of the region is tied to folklore, both within Celtic histories as well as the histories of the indigenous population, and so this will be resonant in what I am trying to accomplish. The film will be a composite of archival photographs and footage (both of my own and found materials), digital audio and video recording, and photographs on location.
Please share this opportunity with older family members. I am most interested in people who have spent most, if not all, of their lives on the Island.
Thank you
