Survival Crackers
Description
Survival crackers have been used by us throughout history and are still used today. Hardtack, sea biscuit, cabin bread, sheet iron, molar breakers, are just some of the many names this survival food has been bestowed throughout the years. It's basically tasteless (made of only water, flour and salt), and hard as a rock if you don't soak it before you consume it. So why would anyone want it? Well, as long as you can keep these suckers away from a humid environment- lest they become 'worm castles' as civil war soldiers have lovingly named them in the past- they can last for years on the shelf, waiting for consumption. In fact, there is one such survival cracker from 1862 that is on exhibit in a museum.
I'm working from a small home kitchen so the survival crackers I'll be making and selling to you will be on order. The price for these are fifty cents per cracker. The adding of honey or sugar can be requested to be added to your order (though there will be an additional twenty five cents added to the overall price).
Both honey and sugar are natural preservatives, only they weren't often on hand historically, and if they were, they were most likely saved for better things than survival crackers. Because, let's face it, why would anyone want to eat these unless they had to?
