The Slow Loris. Cruising Houseboat w Liveaboard Slip, Vancouver
Description
Slow Loris is custom-built, one-of-a-kind cruising houseboat designed by the prominent boat designer Paul Gartside and professionally built in 1991 by Hugh Campbell (formerly Winward Boats of Sydney, BC). The design nods to the Jay Benford Friday Harbour Ferry/False Creek Ferry aesthetic, and maximizes the liveaboard volume available in 25’5” feet of overall length and 13’ beam. She features a heavily-rockered scow-type hull form with an exceptionally shallow draft of 2'3" and bilge keels that allow drying out. Construction is 100% wood with exterior epoxy with fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) sheathing. The vessel underwent an extensive refit by Commodore’s Boats (professional shipwright specializing in wooden boat restoration) while drydocked at Shelter Island Marina, Richmond, BC, in March 2019. The refit included a new keel, various hull skin replacements using 100% marine-grade plywood, and extensive interior layout revisions to improve the liveaboard ergonomics.
The new owner is welcome to take over the current slip at Richmond Marina with full liveaboard moorage and amenities including laundry, showers and mail room. Richmond Marina is located just a short 5 min walk from the new Capstan Station (opening in 2023) and a 15 min walk from the Bridgeport transit hub on the Canada Line.
In 2019, Slow Loris was entered into the Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival at Granville Island, Vancouver, BC, where she won the top prize for “Boat of Greatest Interest” and the “People’s Choice Award”. She is a true “character-boat” and a wonderful solution to Vancouver’s affordable housing problem. Slow Loris has been very well maintained since her refit, including annual engine service by Stem to Stern Marine, and exterior wood repair as needed. She is in excellent turnkey liveaboard and cruising condition, and ready for new ownership who are keen on the floating tiny house life. This boat is a hybrid liveaboard and cruiser, perfectly suited as a spacious tiny home on Vancouver’s Fraser River or cruising from anchorage to anchorage in the Gulf Islands, San Juans or Sunshine Coast.
Mechanicals consist of a 30hp Yanmar diesel engine (3HM35F), engine-coolant/electric hot water, electric Norcold fridge, three-burner Furrion propane cooktop (2x 20lb propane tank capacity with BBQ hookup), a composting Air Head toilet, greywater holding tank and a dedicated shower. Cabin heating options include an electric forced-air heater, Cubic Grizzly wood stove, and electric in-floor heat. Pressurized domestic water is supplied by 200 gal of freshwater storage. 140 gal of diesel capacity is expected to provide about 400 nautical miles of cruising range. The settee dining area converts to a double berth, as does the pilot house berth for a total sleeping capacity of 4 people. A second steering station is situated forward within the exterior bow well for easy docking. Fully equipped 12V electricals with roof-mounted solar panel, two house batteries and a starter, an inverter for AC power and shorepower capability with a Smart Plug installed in 2022.
