Job Description:Job Description This posting is for a CFA Intern, an individual who assists in market research for our team of Portfolio Managers (PM). The position focuses on data collection and evaluation, considering factors such as global geopolitical trends, industry and sector comparisons, building quantitative models, and assessing risk from natural or human sources (ex: natural disaster or unethical human behaviour). Research and analysis skills, such as an extensive knowledge of fundamental analysis, are transferable to any industry that relies heavily on data. Key Duties & Responsibilities:In-depth analysis of publicly-traded and privately-held securities (equities, bonds, derivatives contracts, real estate, private equity assets, private loans, infrastructure, commodities, currencies, etc.) via the analysis of corporate financial statements, industry and peer-group data, computer simulations (e.g., Monte Carlo and VaR simulations), macroeconomic datasets (e.g., inflation and international trade data), structured model outputs (growth and payback models, option pricing models, etc)., financial formula and ratio construction and analysis, management interviews, and alternative data (e.g., changes in app store traction or government orders of a product, etc.).Identifying new securities and private investments suitable for the firm’s various strategies and client portfolios; performing due diligence using the analytical tools mentioned above; and producing point and range estimates of intrinsic value (i.e., ‘target’ price) via model-based forecasts, quantitative simulations, and asset/liability and cash flow pricing/discounting.Design and construction of both institutional investment funds and individual client portfolios managed according to specific mandates (e.g., target rates of return, volatility maximums, ESG constraints, absolute performance, etc.); ongoing monitoring of underlying business performance, price volatility, industry trends, and investment suitability of securities after purchase; ongoing monitoring of portfolio value, volatility, diversification, and exposures post-construction; and generating strategies for portfolio rebalancing and tactical asset allocation shifts on a rolling basis.The identification and execution of institutional trading strategies (e.g., the use of volume-weighted average price algorithms (VWAP)) to obtain best price and execution on bulk securities buy/sell orders with minimal market price impact under variable time constraints.The design, construction, and implementation of a proprietary, model-based trading, rebalancing, and performance-monitoring system, which will enable the firm’s portfolio management software to aggregate, categorize, and trade all firm assets under management (AUM) in bulk: allowing any combination of securities be traded simultaneously across accounts, and allowing client accounts’ exposures to any combination of securities to be analyzed at various levels of aggregation. As a result of this system, the firm will be able to operate and manage numerous specialized institutional strategies at scale.Generation of recurring (e.g., quarterly, annual, etc.) performance measurement and attribution reports, quantitatively evaluating the underlying drivers of the performance and volatility of the firm’s various investment strategies and client portfolios within specified time intervals. Analytical conclusions will be derived in relation to the future implications of each strategy’s risk and return exposures.Construction of bespoke investment strategies (e.g., the monetization of a concentrated securities position via the use of a short sale against the box, the implementation of a long options straddle to capture mis-priced volatility, merger arbitrage via long/short positions, etc.).Actively participating in recurring investment committee meetings, presenting analytical findings, research results, and actionable recommendations to the firm’s portfolio managers. The CFA intern will take an active role in the firm’s investment decision-making process.Preparing institutional and individual investment policy statements (IPS), defining the quantitative and qualitative parameters within which asset allocations and investment decisions can be made.Keep up to date with the wider marketplace and regulatory environment, including operations, legal, and ethical requirements; the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, and the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS). Training Plan:The initial period will be spent working alongside several Chartered Investment Managers and Certified Financial Planners in our firm; participating in investment committee meetings; attending presentations with financial institutions, external CFAs (wholesalers, third-party analysts, etc.), and other third-party professionals; and learning the basics of the firm’s investment decision-making process.The CFA intern will spend a significant amount of time evaluating client and institutional portfolios, investment strategies, and individual securities in collaboration with the firm’s Portfolio Managers, receiving first-hand guidance, critical feedback, and professional direction in all aspects of investment analysis and the investment decision-making process. There will be many one-on-one learning opportunities.In addition, the CFA intern will have ongoing opportunities to learn directly from other professionals in the firm, benefiting directly from their specialized expertise and depth of experience (designations include: CIM, CFP, CHS, CLU, TEP, and CPA candidate). As a result, the CFA intern will learn how the various roles within the organization overlap to generate greater wealth for our clients, such as the impact of investment planning on tax returns: an area of overlap that feeds directly back into the investment decision-making process.The CFA intern will be provided with access to, and receive training on, a variety of specialized software tools which facilitate investment analysis, portfolio management, and trading, such as Morningstar Advisor, NDex, and @risk modeling software. The CFA intern will further receive in-depth training pertaining to the analysis of data extracted from investee companies’ quarterly reports, regulatory filings, and alternative sources (e.g., satellite imagery, Google search volume, etc.).The CFA intern will be encouraged to pursue additional professional designations, university courses, and certifications in the field, such as the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) or Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations; graduate-level courses in advanced accounting or machine learning; and coding bootcamp certifications (e.g., in Python and R or blockchain for finance). These additional courses and certifications will complement the CFA designation, adding further value to the intern’s skill set. The successful candidate will develop their skills in the following fields:Corporate financeData scienceQuantitative investingManipulating and interpreting risk-related data using risk information management software (RIMS)Quantifying the potential negative effects of risk-related activitiesIdentifying practices within the organization that contribute to increased financial riskCompiling reports, summaries, and presentations to communicate findings to PMsCollaborating with PMs on reporting and evaluation techniques to support the ongoing collection and interpretation of risk management dataCollect data about investable companiesBuild earnings models to conduct valuations to prepare recommendations to PMsAnalyzing bonds and default riskAdvanced knowledge of FinTech (financial technology) including Profile, CopperCRM, RazorPlan, NaviPlan, LifeDesign, and NDex, which is one of the most preeminent investment reporting software in Canada. Job Requirements and Qualifications:Post-secondary education is required which demonstrates an ability and interest in learning.Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level I exam pass is required.Previous experience is an asset.Proficient in Microsoft Excel and strong computer skills.
