North american giant millipedes
Description
Offering juvenile Narceus americanus aka north american giant millipede, or pink footed millipede. This is a species native to canada and ontario.
They get to about 4 inches long. the juveniles I have are about 1 inch right now. They grow slow but will breed readily once they are adults.
Their care is relatively simple. Use a smooth plastic/glass container. They can climb the cocking of a glass fish tank and escape, so make sure all surfaces are smooth. Mix 4 inches of topsoil or coconut fibre with hardwood leaves and hard wood, then add 2 more inches of leaves on top. Add enough water for the substrate to form a ball in your hand without water coming out. Finish with bark or branches on top. You can use stuff you find in the forest but then your tank will have a dozen other species in there too. I use old oak leaves from my yard and aspen shavings. The leaves and wood will naturally ferment over time and be eaten by the millipedes.
You can add other species to live alongside them, springtails and mites are fine, isopods are not. They will eat moss, lichen, fishfood/dogfood and some vegetables(cucumber, squash, watermelon rinds) in moderation.
They are nocturnal and spend most of their time burrowed. When disturbed they can not bite, but will release a mild poison containing iodine that stains your skin brown.
They are a bit like having a pet caterpillar that never grows up.
