Wanted: Doodle who wants to become a hearing dog
Description
My husband is hearing-impaired. Two years ago the Lions Society invited him into their hearing dog program. Al was paired with a young black lab. We’ve had two wonderful dogs in the past, and he trained them to walk by his side, stay, lie down, and respond to at least a dozen commands. Al increased his dog-training skills through the hearing dog program, and he and the dog did exceptionally well. The dog, Emily, learned how to respond to sounds (alarm clocks, phones, honking horns and more) and alert my husband to them. However, when Al was halfway into the program I discovered I had severe allergies. I asked him to turn down the dog, so he told the society he had to quit the program. Al is a very caring person. Besides training his dog, he helped a lot of people there who had physical disabilities as well as hearing loss. He befriended a young adult woman who was wheelchair bound had frequent seizures as well as hearing loss. The Lions Society staff felt he was valuable to the program and didn’t want him to leave, regardless of whether he was taking the dog. Al stayed and helped the young woman train her dog and graduate from the program. I am very sad that I had to ask him to come home without Emily the dog. I’ve learned since that my allergies won’t react to a hypoallergenic dog, such as a doodle mix. Al will be retiring soon, and I’m hoping to get him a mid-sized, female hypoallergenic dog so he can train it and have companionship apart from just me. The dog doesn’t need to be a puppy, but it should be under two years old, which would make it most receptive to the specialized training he could give it. We have acreage on the Sunshine Coast with a fully fenced back yard. We don’t have a lot of money but could pay a reasonable fee for the dog. If you have one or know of one, please contact me.
