Gamblers Needed for Research!
Description
Researchers from the Centre for Gambling Research at UBC are looking for people experiencing gambling problems to take part in a study investigating cognitive factors associated with gambling decision tasks.
The study contains a single 3-4 hour test session at the Vancouver General Hospital’s Eye Care Centre (360A-2550 Willow Street) and two subsequent telephone interviews (each 15 minutes) at 6 and 12 months after the initial session. You will be compensated $30 for your time, and we will reimburse any transit and parking expenses accrued. You will earn bonus payments (an additional $30-$70) on the computer tasks.
To be eligible for the study, you must:
• Be between the ages of 19 and 65 years old.
• Be able to read, write and speak fluent English
• Be experiencing at least some problems associated with gambling (based on a questionnaire)
• Not have a history of/current neurological illness, head injury, or psychiatric hospitalization
• Not have started (or changed) any medication or medication dose in the past 6 weeks
Prior to the test session, we will arrange a telephone call to ask some questions about your general health, mental health, and gambling behavior to confirm your suitability.
During the test session, you will undergo a structured clinical interview with a member of our team, privately complete questionnaires regarding your personality and gambling, and complete some computerized tasks. The tasks involve choosing between two probability scenarios and will be accompanied by eye tracking, done non-invasively using a special apparatus with a small camera.
Confidentiality: All data pertaining to this study will remain anonymous. Written records will be stored in a locked filing cabinet within the Centre for Gambling Research at UBC, accessible only to the researchers of this study. Electronic records will be stored in password-protected computers in the Centre for Gambling Research and the Eye Care Centre and protected by the departmental servers.
