* About the parents and previous litters
Both dams are purebred standard fawn with black mask and sire is purebred black. Adults enrolled in our breeding program have been health screened for genetic conditions prior to breeding and attend yearly wellness checks in addition to pre and post whelping assessments to ensure overall health. Parents nor previous litters have expressed any respiratory issues, a common problem in pugs of which we have successfully begun to breed out. Pallets and nares have been cleared in all adults and expressed in offspring as well leading for a much healthier lifestyle. Excessive rolls are very common in this breed which is another trait that we have begun to reduce successfully. While our pups still express the typical “nose worm” it does not significantly drop down over the nostrils leading for future breathing disorders and skin irritation. Forehead wrinkles are present but our pugs lack significant rolls across the body as this leads to various health complications. Parents express a perfect double curled tail as a sought after trait. All pups have proven to express this trait as well.
* Puppy information
All puppies will be ready for their new homes at 10 weeks. Puppies will go home with first set of shots, three times dewormed, personal microchip number and vet check. Early neurological stimulation is practiced daily which aids in producing a very well balanced and confident pug. All are introduced to basic house training with use of a puppy pee turf to familiarize each pup with this texture making the transition to outside training much easier. We begin basics in kennel training at 4 weeks of age. All are fed a 100% raw diet starting at 4 weeks. Raw proteins are rotated weekly to ween out any sensitivities. All will be leaving with a new home starter kit which will include everything you will need to get your puppy settled into his or her new home (blanket with mother’s scent, current feeding dish, toys, vet check book, no breeding contract signed by both parties, detailed pug care guide, house training guide, basics and importance in training guide, printed puppy photos, microchip information, portion of current food, pumpkin purée, sample puppy shampoo, sample deshedding shampoo, sample paw balm, pee pads, sample urine eliminator, pet valu “new puppy” coupon book, guillotine style nail clippers as used by breeders and many other goodies to ensure they are pre-spoiled!

* Origin
Pugs are a toy breed that date back as far as 750BC and were solely used as companions by China’s emperors. The breed became very popular across Europe and England eventually finding their way in many family homes today. Bred for their true loyalty and very charming personalities, a pug the perfect family companion! Pugs can express either a double coat or a single coat. A purebred pug has a small range of colours including standard fawn, apricot fawn, silver fawn, pure black and black with white on chest no larger than a toonie. All express a black mussel and black ears termed as a “mask”
* Nutritional needs
Pugs are prone to obesity which is why it is important that their caloric intake is monitored and exercise is regular. Obesity in pugs (like many other breeds) can cause serious medical conditions in your companion.
We choose to feed all pups and adults that go through our home a BARF diet consisting of a 70:10:10:10 ratio of meat : organ : bone : fruit & veg. This significantly benefits the dog in many different aspects including higher energy levels, shinier coat, stronger teeth & bones, better breath, easier digestion, decreased volume and frequency of bowel movements, decreased water intake ultimately eliminating risk of bloat, defined muscle definition along with an overall superior health as just a few to mention! **(Raw diet is not required to be continued, we just like to give our pups the best start at life as possible!)**
* Temperament
Pugs are very loyal and easygoing making them the perfect family dog! This breed will thrive by your side whether you own a large property with children and other pets or small apartment on your own. Although they are often referred to as the couch potato of the dog world, this is not entirely true. They certainly enjoy a lazy Sunday with cuddles on the couch but are always ready for a good walk around town. A trip to the public dog park will be sure to unlock the zoomies!
* Training
Pugs are incredibly food motivated (hence why they are prone to obesity) and huge people pleasers which makes them just as easy to train as any other breed. Although they can be stubborn at times, positive reinforcement is always recommended! Negative reinforcement/punishment will introduce fear in your small companion so be sure that you are training with the correct methods! Socialization classes or proper socialization should be introduced at a young age as this is quite the curious breed. If not socialized well, their curiosity will get the best of them and may get them into trouble.
* Common Question: Don’t pugs shed... A LOT?
Although this can be true for a double coat pug, single coats shed significantly less. A regular bushing with a deshedding brush will be sure to decrease that loose fur on your couch! A seasonal bath with deshedding shampoo works wonders at tightening up those hair follicles as well!
* Is there anything else I should know about the pug breed?
As many pug owners and vets will tell you, they are not too fond of having their nails clipped… it’s very important to handle their feet daily so that they become desensitized to this action. Our pug guide offers an extensive overview on canine mail anatomy and proper clipping techniques. *Puppies feet are handled by breeders daily as a good introduction to this desensitization! Clippers are introduced at 4 weeks with first nail trim at 5 weeks and weekly until pickup*
Pugs are a brachycephalic breed which makes them prone to heat stroke in hot or humid weather. This can be dire to this breed so its very important to monitor your companion when outside on hot days. A cooling pad or cooling vest is certainly a good investment during the summer season!
Pugs have a HUGE personality! I like to describe them as little toddlers. They are basically velcro and will follow you around absolutely everywhere! They have no sense of space and will likely sleep across your head all night in attempt to be as close to you as possible. When they want something, they will do anything in their power to get it (especially food!). Don’t let that cute little face convince you to give them your dinner or they will beg every time!
If you have read this far, a pug may be the right breed for you! Please make a carful consideration before making a decision on your companion. A dog is absolutely not a gift nor temporary. This is a 12-15 year commitment or more depending on your lifestyle.
