Job Description
To care for and instruct children ages 3 months - 2 years in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth, as well as take on the responsibilities of the Director in their absence.
Qualifications
Level 1 or 2 ECE classification
Minimum of 2 year experience working in a daycare setting
Current Infant/Child First-Aid & CPR
Vulnerable Sector Check
Child Abuse Registry Check
Duties and Responsibilities
- Create an inviting and stress free drop off by greeting the children at the door, helping them to remove outerwear and providing them with snuggles and toys to help create a smooth transition.
- Provide a variety of materials and resources for the infants to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and imaginative play.
- Organize and lead activities designed to promote physical, intellectual, emotional and social development including but not limited to games, crafts, music and storytelling.
- Prepare lesson plans 2 weeks in advance and submit them to the Director for approval.
- Prepare materials and classroom for the day's planned activities at the start of shift.
- Feed infants who are unable to feed themselves, i.e. bottle feeding or spoon feeding. For older infants and toddlers, teach proper eating habits and table manners by modeling behavior at snack and lunch.
- Actively participate in the infants’ play and activities when appropriate.
- Attend to the infants’ basic needs including feeding, dressing, diapering and sleeping.
- Follow the posted daily routine allowing for some flexibility when necessary.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior using the current Behavior Guidance Policy.
- Observe and evaluate infant’s behavior, as well as physical, intellectual, social and emotional development.
- Complete a progress report on each infant twice yearly (November and May).
- Maintain an open line of communication with parents.
- Arrange indoor and outdoor environments to facilitate creative play, motor skill development and safety.
- Keep the indoor environment tidy and free of clutter by encouraging the older infants to pick up toys, cleaning and sanitizing the highchairs after activities and sweeping the floor. This includes a proper clean up either before going outside or leaving at the end of shift.
- Prepare the playground each morning by checking for hazards, taking out the toys and drying the playground equipment if necessary.
- Keep paperwork, i.e. lesson plans, daily activities, daily reports and progress reports up to date and properly filed. These must be completed during rest time or when another employee is able to provide relief.
- Clean and sanitize toys and equipment a minimum of twice weekly or as needed. This must be completed during rest time or when another staff can provide relief.
- Clean and sanitize the cribs at the end of each week or as needed.
- Attend workshops to maintain the required number of hours for professional development. (30 hours in 3 years)
- Keep personal records up to date. i.e. Child Abuse Registry (3 years), Vulnerable Sector Check (5 years) and First Aid Certification (3 years)
- Complete tasks that may be assigned outside of the regular daily duties.
- Must be able to work both the opening (7:30 - 3:30) and closing (9:30 -5:30) shifts
The center is closed any days that the school is closed with the exception of inservice days. This includes holidays, storm days and during the summer. Staff is paid for storm days and holidays, excluding the two weeks for Christmas, 1 week for March Break and summer vacation (July/August), however staff is eligible to collect EI.
