Introduction & Background
The Organic Agriculture Nova Scotia Association, known as Organic Nova Scotia (ONS), is a registered not-for-profit society. Started in 2019 by Nova Scotia organic certified producers and processors, ONS represents and promotes the organic sector in the province.
ONS has secured funding to implement an Institutional Procurement Pilot Project (IPP). The IPP is a pilot program intended to increase awareness and procurement of local organic food by post-secondary institutions in Nova Scotia and facilitate relationships between these institutions and the organic food sector. ONS requires a Project coordinator to administer and manage all aspects of this initiative under the direction and with the support of Organic Nova Scotia and representatives of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture (NSDA).
Nature and Scope of Work
Duties and Responsibilities
1) Assist post-secondary institutions to increase:
a) awareness of organic products that are produced/processed in Nova Scotia,
b) connections with NS organic producers and processors,
c) opportunities for both participating institutions and organic processors/producers,
d) purchases of NS local organic products.
2) Increase the capacity of Organic Nova Scotia to coordinate new market opportunities for organic producers and processors via institutional procurement.
3) Develop an inventory of certified organic production capacity and interest in marketing to post-secondary institutions.
4) Identify the logistical needs to effectively aggregate and distribute organic products to post-secondary institutions.
5) Measure and identify existing organic products being purchased by institutions and track changes resulting from the project so that the impact of this project can be quantified.
6) Determine the cost differential for organic Nova Scotia food and beverage products versus non-organic.
7) Explore incentives to increase the purchase of Nova Scotia organic products with selected institutions.
8) Manage pilot project budget, monthly reporting and administration.
9) Provide other services as necessary for the completion of this pilot program.
Reporting and other Terms
The Project coordinator will report to a committee established by ONS with the participation of NSDA staff.
● This is a contract position beginning June 1, 2023 and ending on March 31, 2024 (10 month contract)
● Remuneration is $40,000 based on 80% full-time equivalency, with an additional travel budget
● The Project coordinator will work from a home office and have their own office equipment, computer and telephone.
● Work will not be subcontracted without the approval of the ONS Board of Directors.
● Responses must be received by May 19, 2023 at 5 PM Atlantic Standard Time.
● Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for an interview.

Candidates will:
● Be familiar with the certified organic food sector in Nova Scotia. Experience as a producer or with the marketing of organic products is an asset.
● Possess verbal and written communication skills to foster relationships with multi sector participants and partners.
● Demonstrate experience in the management of projects requiring data collection and analysis, report writing, and collaboration with a variety of stakeholders.
● Maintain a valid drivers license and have access of an automobile to travel to various locations in the province as required by the ONS board.
● Demonstrate an interest and commitment to the development of the local organic food sector.
● Have an understanding of the issues involved in business development and entrepreneurship.
● Able to work independently.
