DanceHouse, in partnership with Vancouver Tap Dance Society, presents the Canadian premiere of Dorrance Dance’s electrifying SOUNDspace, on stage April 19 and 20, 2024 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. Originally choreographed for New York City’s St. Mark’s Church, the work is a high-spirited and wildly innovative exploration of the relationship between sound and movement – from the hypnotic slide of socks, and slap of bare feet, to the percussive and thrilling roar of fast-tapping heels. SOUNDspace is a breathtaking meeting of past traditions and contemporary techniques. As the virtuoso display of physical percussion gives rise to a wall of sound, the performers unite, building a syncopated conflagration that will burn down the house. DanceHouse and Dancers of Damelahamid present the Vancouver premiere of the politically-charged and spiritually-centred work, Vástádus eana – The answer is land, on stage February 23 and 24, 2024 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. Choreographed by Elle Sofe Sara, the full-length work is a powerful exploration and reclamation of the central tenets of Sámi cultural identity: community and kinship between people and nature. Having been subjected to almost-total cultural obliteration through residential schools, language suppression, and religious conversion, Vástádus eana – The answer is land embodies a critically important message about the foundational attachment arising from community and culture, and offers the possibility of a new relationship with the natural world. Through a radical act of resilience, the performers open the evening by guiding the audience through a traditional spiritual practice outdoors before shepherding them into the theatre. MURRAY McLAUCHLAN - The Hourglass TourMurray McLauchlan is one of Canada’s most highly regarded singer/songwriters, and with good cause. Over a 50-year career, he has released 20 albums and been awarded 11 Junos. His songs Farmer’s Song, Down by the Henry Moore, Whispering Rain and Sweeping the Spotlight Away are now considered Canadian standards. Murray is also a painter, an author, an actor, a radio host; he's been bestowed an Honourary Doctor of Laws and appointed to The Order of Canada. That’s quite a ride. For many years Murray’s touring had been restricted to Lunch At Allen's, whose members also include Ian Thomas, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church. But with the release of his critically acclaimed Hourglass, he’s back on the road treating concert goers to a seamless blend of old and new.
Here’s what he has to say: "As a songwriter I know that it's not enough to sit in your kitchen and write. Your songs need to be heard. Music is a communicative art and if it isn't brought in front of people there is no way to tell if that end has been met. I like to think of a concert tour as a kind of roving gallery to test your art and your ideas. I try to do my very best to make it worthwhile for folks to be there and to perhaps look at things in a new way when they leave."
And this, in a nutshell, is the Murray McLauchlan concert experience.Reserved seating tickets for Murray McLauchlan ...Hourglass are $67.50 (tax & facility fees included, additional surcharges may apply), and are available from the box offices listed below.
Showtime is 7:30pm. For more info, pics & music clips, visit www.shantero.com or www.murraymclauchlan.com
