Just a heads up to my fellow farmers - Victoria Area
As farmers, we do what we can to make ends meet. Sometimes, that includes selling off some of our stock from time to time, which requires advertising and dealing with the public. Advertising is a breeze, it's dealing with "the public" that can be tricky or down right infuriating at times; especially when it coincides with the busiest time of year for us folk.
I've been selling my turkeys and, in general, had few complaints. That was, until last week when I was contacted by "Kelly" through Kijiji.
"Hi! I’m looking for a Tom, do you have any left I bought 8 poults this year but ALL of them are hens and I’d really like a Tom to try and raise my own
Kelly"I always like to go that extra mile for new farmers starting out. So, I decided to offer him or her one of my breeding toms to help her flock get off to a good start.
"Hi Kelly I have several young toms. I also have a 2 year old West Holland White tom that I'm reluctantly going to part with. He is very experienced and would make an excellent guardian/breeding stock for your flock. He is the big white one in the picture and he is $50. 778-425-0507"
Kelly seemed excited with her responses.
"Oh wow! I’d be very interested in him. I have a question, excuse my ignorance in the matter as this is only our 2 season doing turkeys. I have a heritage breed, I’m assuming turkeys are capable of breeding to other breeds of turkey? seems silly to ask but I just don’t know lol )
Oh so cool! Lol. We have 10 acres, and we have 9 haired Sheep. He’d have lost of area! He won’t go in the oven I need a
Good breeder
I wouldn’t be able to pick him up till Tuesday would that be okay?"
Of course, I answered her questions and suggested a time. Kelly agreed on the time I suggested.
"Tuesday afternoon around 2pm? That's when I get a break in my chores.
That can totally work!"
When Tuesday came, I hustled to do my regular chores ahead of schedule and put off my hay pick up to the next day so I could be ready for Kelly's scheduled appointment and be able to give him or her my undivided attention. Well, 2 pm came and went, while I sat and waited like an idiot for their arrival.
Around 4 pm, I fired off a polite message to Kelly.
"Are you still coming to pick him up?"
To which, Kelly's response was,
"Hi! I’m SO sorry. I have been struggling with a terrible migraine all day after a eye exam this morning I meant to message you because I do not want to be THAT person so I am so sorry.
My other half and I are coming to sooke Saturday evening for dinner at a friends they live on Robinson rd just past otter point CrossFit could Saturday work for you?
Let me know and again my sincere apologies
Kelly"Call me a glutton for punishment or just plain dumb. I agreed, to meet this person again so we made new arrangements.
"What time on Saturday?
How about like 4? Could that work?
I will need you to be here between 3 and 3:30 as we start evening chores at 4."
So you guessed it. I hustled to be ready for the appointment again aaaaaaaand Kelly was no show aaaaaaagain. No phone call. No message. No nothing.
I was pissed ... to say the least. Instead of letting it simmer on the back burner I decided, for once, to let a wanker know exactly how I felt about their behaviour.
"Well, don't I just feel special! Twice, YOU have requested I set time aside for you and twice, YOU have ignorantly left me hanging. Do you have any idea what it takes for a working farmer to schedule time out of hectic work day on a farm? Based on your behaviour, I'm guessing you don't or don't care. I was willing to let the first time slide because you at least notified me, AFTER the fact. What you don't realize is the farming community is small and farmers talk to each other so I'll be spreading the word. Lose my number and never contact me again. And yes, you are one of "those people"."
While sending this message won't garner me a sale, it sure as hell felt good to let this ignorant person know how I felt about their craptastic behaviour. The moral of this story is folks, I suggest you not do business with "Kelly" if he or she decides to contact you regarding buying some of your livestock.

*Serious inquiries only 778-425-0507Saanen goats bring their own unique characteristics of high milk production with a much smaller carbon footprint than cows. The milk's butterfat percentage is usually in the 3.5% range. The average milk production of a Saanen goat doe is 2545 pounds of milk per year. Their milk tastes exactly like fresh cow milk, is silky in texture and is renowned for making some of the finest gourmet cheeses.
You often hear the terms hardy, calm and sweet used to describe this breed. Our Saanens are no exception. They are well socialized and have attended several events to educate the public. These Saanens are also from a closed working herd with 70+ year old bloodlines, which originated in Switzerland. The herd has an excellent overall health record.
While we would love to keep all of our beautiful Saanen goats, we also realize the importance of preserving these heritage bloodlines and regularly offer our animals to other farmers to preserve them. The herd comes with lifetime support and we offer mentorship in husbandry, milking practices and animal health. We want you to succeed and help is just a phone call away.
Please ensure you have proper fencing and shelter in place prior to purchasing one of our Saanens. We do not sell animals to unprepared homes or as "lawn mowers" to be tethered.
