*Professional Singer and Vocal Coach in SE Calgary now accepting new students.* With 23 years of teaching experience and over 30 years of performing -- Singing and helping others find confidence with their voice is what I love to do!
SINGING LESSONS:
The techniques I teach help to build a solid foundation for a healthy, happy voice, which can be applied to ANY genre of music. I offer beginner to advanced singing lessons, as well as speech coachings for anyone wanting to improve their speaking/presentation voice. (for more details on speech coaching, see below)
I strongly believe that exploration and body awareness is key. Helping students explore their instrument through a variety of activities, such as: vocal play, resonators, sound effects, body mapping, breathing, acting, alignment, emotion and enjoyable music – creates in strong connection and confidence with their voice. They learn how it FEELS to sing properly and not rely only on the sound.
My teaching experience extends to:
- Audition preparation (solos, musicals, competitions, plays etc.)
- Assisting in recovering from vocal injuries and misuse
- Harmony work and Interval training
- Stage presence
- Acting
- Rock band coachings, recording prep, song writing feedback, harmony work
- Working with children
- Opera and Classical music performance and coaching
I've spent years on professional opera stages, in concerts, doing musical theatre, in jazz groups, festivals and choirs. Over two decades of my own vocal training with some of the best coaches in North America, has allowed me to select the best techniques from countless teachers and pass them on to my students.
Whether your goal is to simply sing better at karaoke, for self enjoyment or for a much bigger stage - Jubilee Auditorium anyone?, I would love to help you discover what your voice has to offer.
SPEECH COACHING:
Working in business and the arts for over 26 years has given me the opportunity to hone my speaking, singing and communication skills from many different perspectives. In a speech coaching, I will help you develop a clear, confident speaking voice for presentations, meetings, podcasts, online videos, public speaking and daily interactions. Command a room with confident body language and facial expressions. Give strategic, real-time feedback along with live practice...and so much more!
Contact me at singingwithjs@gmail.com (Jennifer) or reply to this ad and we can set up a free consult to see if it's the right fit. Lessons available in-person or online.

THE DRUMS, possibly the fastest growing instrument in the world. It is also one of the most fun instruments to play. Like every instrument, consistency and commitment are the quintessential to success. There is no short cut.
Unfortunately, the drum set is the most misunderstood instrument. It is NOT an instrument that you 'bash on'. Just like the next percussion instrument - the piano, you learn proper 'touch' on the instrument, proper technique so as not to cause injury, sound contrast, dynamic contrast, and consistent tempo.
Unlike most instruments, the drum set is a collection of 5 instruments put together as one instrument. It's all about muscle memory. Practising requires 1/2 hour a day, 4 or 5 days a week.
Each lesson is tailored to the individual's goals. Using a program that mutes the drum part, I show students how to play for the music, rather than just aimlessly learning drum patterns. In other words, I help students of the drum set become musicians. Every pattern learned has to make sense as to why we learn that pattern. Playing drums is only as good as supporting the music.
My rate is $40.00 per hour. I offer 1 hour or 90 minute lessons weekly, or bi-weekly. I am available, seven days a week from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
I accept adults, seniors, and students from Grade 7 to 12 who need help with their music in their jazz school band, or music in general that they are struggling with. Kids younger than 10 years old, you will be vetted by myself to see if we are a good fit for each other.

"I truly appreciate my drum teacher for his patience, dedication, and passion for music. Phoenix not only teaches with skill but also inspires me to push my limits and grow as a drummer. I really appreciate his ability to break down complex rhythms and techniques into something understandable. It has made a huge difference in my progress. Every lesson is engaging and motivating, and I always walk away feeling more confident. I love his accents that he makes because they make me laugh a lot. I’m grateful for Phoenix's guidance and the encouragement he provides—it’s clear he genuinely cares about his students’ success. THANK YOU TONY FOR BEING SO AMAZING!!!!"
"I’ve had the pleasure of learning from Phoenix and I couldn’t be more grateful for the experience. He is incredibly kind and approachable, making every lesson feel comfortable and enjoyable. His deep knowledge of drumming is evident in the way he explains techniques and concepts – everything is clear, thorough, and easy to understand.
What truly stands out is his patience. Whether I'm struggling with a particular rhythm or technique, he takes the time to ensure I grasp it before moving on. His talent and passion for drumming shine through in every session, and his ability to teach is just as impressive as his playing.
I highly recommend Phoenix to anyone looking to improve their drumming skills. He’s not only a fantastic instructor but also a wonderful person to learn from!"

Are you an aspiring guitarist seeking help with the basics? Do you wish you could play around the campfire or join the open jam session at the pub? Are you an intermediate player hoping to round out your skills? Are you an experienced player seeking advice on theory, composition and the finer points of playing, or on how to read & interpret guitar tab properly? Or are you hoping to learn your favorite riffs and solos note-for-note? Are you a parent looking for a friendly, patient guitar teacher that won't flake out on your kids, AND knows what he's doing?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, I am here to help. I have been helping students of all ages and backgrounds for over 15 years. Total beginners are totally welcome. My youngest student just turned 6, and my oldest just turned 73.
I can teach any style or skill level, acoustic or electric. My specialty is in rock, pop, blues, funk and alternative styles, but almost any genre is teachable. I also specialize in music theory, and I can show you how to master the fretboard and play in any key with ease. I can also teach advanced reading techniques for tablature that will help you make short work of intimidating tabs.
I've played in countless bands over the decades, including several original projects for which I was the principal music-writer, and several cover bands, including a 90's-rock cover band, and tribute bands for both Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. I can help you bring your playing up to the level where you can go to open jams, join a band, or start your own.
The lessons can take place at my home studio, or at your home (travel cost included), or we can do online lessons using Zoom or Facetime or Whatsapp. I am located in the deep southwest, in Bridlewood.
