Tree swallows are attractive backyard birds for several reasons. Their graceful, aerobatic, energetic flight can be a joy to watch as they swoop about, and their glossy plumage glitters in the sunlight. They are relatively quiet species and while their song is typically musical and chirping.
The most desirable characteristic of Tree swallows is their voracious appetites for insects. These insectivorous birds can consume hundreds of insects every day, and inviting a family of them into the backyard can provide exceptional (and free!) pest control. Feeds on many flies, beetles, winged ants, and others. Also eats some spiders, and will eat sand fleas (which are crustaceans).
Most of the bird houses available in the stores are more for decoration and not up to the standards for habitation of Tree Swallows. They are too small and this could lead to stress, overheating in the summer and death of the young birds.
This Tree Swallow Houses are pine wood.
I wood burn the most of the bird houses to make them more attractive for my customers to hang them in their backyard and I also can add some personal notes like: HAPPY BIRTHDAY or BEST MOM or special date if you would like to use it as a present.
EXTRA: For $1 extra - you can purchase a bag of white feathers from my hens. Tree swallows are very attracted by white feathers, which they use for bedding. They fly miles for one of them, like some women for a gucci handbag.
For our little bird friends - I also have building kits available with instruction, necessary tools and accessories.
If you would like to order and get them shipped - no problem - I give you the quote of shipping to your requested destination and this amount will be added to the purchase price.

Chickadee, Nuthatch, Titmouse, Wren and Downy Woodpecker could move in this beautiful bird house. Which species you will attract with this bird house depends on, where you place the nesting aid. It is important to know the nesting habitat, Nest box height above ground and minimum spacing of each species. Attached to each birdhouse will be an instruction for installation for the above mentioned kind of birds.
This bird houses are also available at the CO-OP Farm and Garden Store in Antigonish.

Barn Swallows can be beneficiary to your backyard. They can control flies and other insects. But this species is in decline.
What threatens The Barn Swallows?
Barn Swallows have experienced a significant decline since the mid-1980s.
While there have been losses in the number of available nest sites, such as open barns, and in the amount of foraging habitat in open agricultural areas, the causes of the recent population decline are not well understood.
This bird’s nests are often destroyed when old buildings in rural areas are demolished or fall down.
In addition, as farms modernize, many old barns that offered easy access are being replaced by large metal sheds with tight-fitting doors and no windows.
Massive pesticide spraying of fields can also reduce the insect population barns swallows need for food. (as per Ontario.ca)The number of Barn Swallows in Nova Scotia decreased by 60 to 95 % and forced the province to add the Barn Swallows on the protected species list.

• Help these beautiful birds and give them a place to breed, where foraging is available.
• Install one of the pre-fabricated mud nests, which should be installed under eaves or car-ports, fire wood sheds with open sides or in your barn and keep a window open.
• You can attract them with artificial nests, they will think other barn swallows bred here before and this is a safe place / area.
• With the installation of this artificial mud nest, you can direct or re-direct the Barn Swallows to an area on your property, where they are welcome to raise their family.
• This pre-fabricated nest is strong and can not fall down, because it is screwed to the structure. Vinyl siding and sheet metal is the most common building material, but has a very smooth surface. In a lot of cases and I witnessed this myself, the mud nest will stick to the structure as long as it is new and fresh. However, wind, temperature and humidity changes everyday and throughout the seasons, which leads to movements of the building material that weakens the connection of the natural nest. In many cases the nests break off, causing the whole hatch to be devastated. When I moved to my farm, there was no Barn Swallows at all. Than we build our big shed. Years later we received some visits from Barn Swallows and some tried to build nests and hatch, but always unsuccessful. I have done some research and started to built the artificial mud nests. They were installed at my own place and friends’ places to test, whether the Barn Swallow will except these nests and will breed.
We have now 5 known accepted artificial mud nests in our community and we hope for more.
If this is working at our places – why not at yours?
