Are you looking to help? Are you an introvert looking to help behind the scenes? Or are you a fan of technology, passionate about sharing with others all that you can do? Perhaps you’re looking for a volunteer experience where you can make a friend!
CNIB is filling four volunteer roles that all help people with sight loss in unique ways. If one of these positions interests you, we’d love to hear from you!
Tech Mate: Tech Mates provide one-on-one and group support to people with sight loss learning how to use their smart devices.
Virtual Event Assistant: Virtual Event Assistants login to CNIB Nova Scotia’s virtual events 20 minutes before they start and assist by using the Zoom platform to individually connect people into the event.
Weekly Caller: Weekly Callers phone a list of 20 interested people with sight loss once a week to let them know about upcoming events.
Vision Mate: Vision Mates are trained, sighted volunteers who are matched one-on-one with a person with vision loss. You effectively act like the person's eyes; observing and describing what is required to empower the person to accomplish the tasks at hand for a couple of hours a week. In your community, we’re looking to help:
• JJ, 40s, has a cat and would like help with reading, sending letters, and learning computer skills. He’d also enjoy the visits. He is vaccinated and is open to having a caller.
• Nova, 80s, enjoys church, going for short walks, reading romantic books and biographies, and visiting with her 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She is a retired teacher and used to do crafts. She is looking for a female volunteer to walk beside her just to make sure she’s not missing a step. She’d also like help with shopping and reading. She has some hearing loss especially if a person speaks fast and low. She is vaccinated
• Peggy, 70s, is looking for someone to help her walk on an indoor track and practice using her white cane (specific training will be provided).

I am an independent filmmaker and artist looking to speak with long term residents, or past residents, of the Sydney area. I am currently working short film about Cape Breton Island. People who have moved away from the area are still of interest, though I am most interested in those who were born and raised. Looking for people of all ages. I will be traveling to the Sydney area in the spring, likely mid-March or May, to record in-person interviews and footage. At this time, I do not have enough funding confirmed to compensate participants. However, I am still trying to arrange this and so I will be able to confirm this closer to the travel date.
I am a woman currently working as an artist and part time professor at a college in Massachusetts. My mother was raised in Sydney and I spent my summers there as a child. I still try to return to parts of Nova Scotia today, but this project is focusing on the history of the Sydney region. These interviews will help to expand my own narrative of this place and its identity, and also function as footage for the film itself. I will also be documenting footage of Sydney and surrounding areas including the sites of the Sydney Steel Corporation and the Sydney Tar Ponds, and potential locations such as the Holy Angels Convent, the Whitney Pier, and The Cape Breton Highlands National Park. So much of the history of the region is tied to folklore, both within Celtic histories as well as the histories of the indigenous population, and so this will be resonant in what I am trying to accomplish. The film will be a composite of archival photographs and footage (both of my own and found materials), digital audio and video recording, and photographs on location.
Please share this opportunity with older family members. I am most interested in people who have spent most, if not all, of their lives on the Island.
Thank you

• David, Truro, is friendly and enjoys going for walks and shopping at Giant Tiger. He’s looking for a volunteer, who can visit between 1 and 10 p.m. to help with reading mail, walking, and friendly visiting. He’s a non-smoker, who is vaccinated and uses a walker.
• Bernice, 80s, Upper Stewiacke, would like a female volunteer to help with reading and going for walks. She is kind and friendly and loves people. She also enjoys reading the paper, and watching tv. She has a hearing aid and a walker; she is a non-smoker, who is vaccinated. Her son filled out the form, but she didn’t seem overly interested

Are you looking for a flexible opportunity to volunteer, while seeing the real-life impact you're making? CNIB has the position for you!
As a Vision Mates, you are paired with a person who is blind or partially sighted to help with sighted tasks in their home, deliver groceries, or call to chat. Our current volunteers find this both easy (it feels like spending time with a friend) and flexible (visits/calls are scheduled between the volunteer and their match at a mutually convenient time). Training is provided.
We’re currently looking to match:
- Lorne, 80s, Falmouth, is looking for help with reading mail and going for walks on Tuesdays or Fridays. He’d also like the social time. He retired from working at a Gypsum Company after 31 years. He has knee problems and enjoys talking with people about daily life, the weather, and occasionally politics. He also enjoys the evening news and comedies like Three is Company.
- Robert, Berwick, is looking for a volunteer to reading mail, computer e-mails, and occasionally driving. He is a senior with age related vision loss and other health issues that have resulted in progressive loss of independence. His wife passed a year ago and he is a father of three who live in NS, but not close by. He enjoys talking about current affairs, family, sports, and the weather. He has hearing aids, but they may not always be worn. His daily schedule is very important due to Parkinson’s disease.Interested in volunteering for this position? Email jeff.deviller@cnib.ca and he'd be happy to answer any of your questions!

We are looking for people born between 1946-1965 to take part in a study of leisure, work, and life transitions. While many baby boomers have begun to retire, others are unable to retire or are choosing not to retire for a variety of reasons. If this sounds like you, we want to learn from you. As a participant in this study, you will be asked to participate in an online blog with others in your generation by sharing your experiences and perceptions of leisure, work, and your decision not to retire. Your participation would involve 4 sessions per year for three years, each of which is approximately two weeks. You will be asked to log on to the blog about 5 times in each session. You can create new posts and/or comment on the posts of others. If you volunteer to participate, you will be contacted by a researcher to help you set up an account and get comfortable navigating the blog. In appreciation for your time, you will receive a $50.00 gift card annually. For more information about this study, or to volunteer for this study, please contact: Rebecca Genoe Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at 306-585-4781 or Email: rebecca.genoe@uregina.ca. I have lost my second home due to arson by the same person that burned down my property down in Canning while police and the courts and a local judge allow him to carry this on and on. Because I didn't have insurance on either I do without any help at all. No red cross no salvation arming or anyone else bothered due to police that try to shut me up. I won't be surprised if this is removed.

The East Coast Cannabis Substitution Program has been up and running for a year and a half now. We have achieved “not for profit” status, and are set to keep saving lives with cannabis well into 2021.
This program takes a lot of people, doing a lot of work, making up many hours a week, for no money; to help provide infused edibles to people struggling with one addiction or another.
We pass out care packages with infused edibles, so people who otherwise aren’t thinking about food, can also get the nutrition and calories they need to heal, stay warm and be healthy.
We are looking for another volunteer.
This time we are in need of a KIT BUILDER
-Volunteers responsible for assembling the care packages. Duties include bagging edibles, stamping bags, counting, folding, stuffing, organizing, making capsules and more.
This position requires a few days a week (usually between Tuesday and Friday), hours vary.
The work takes place in Lower Sackville. More info to be provided during first meeting.
While the CSP is a lot of work and responsibility, we try and keep the work environment as fun as possible. I don’t want this to ever start to feel like actual “work”. Once it feels like actual “work”, it becomes less enjoyable.
We do this because we love it; not because we have to.
And I believe that’s an important thing to try and remember.
If you’re still interested in volunteering after reading all this, I hope to hear from you. Message me.

If you are 37+ weeks pregnant or recently gave birth and live in Nova Scotia, consider joining our research study!
Essential Coaching for Every Mother is a text message program that sends daily texts about caring for yourself and your baby for the first six weeks postpartum. The messages are based on public health recommendations and have been approved by moms and healthcare providers.
If you participate, you will be randomized (like flipping a coin) into one of two groups: (1) the Essential Coaching for Every Mother group or (2) a control group.
The Essential Coaching for Every Mother group will receive texts up to 6 weeks postpartum. Texts will be sent two times per day for two weeks, once a day after that. The control group will not receive any messages.
Both groups will be asked to complete a survey after you give birth and at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. You will receive $15 for each survey you complete.
If you are 37+ weeks pregnant, text “PREGNANT” to 902-702-6278 for more information and to sign up. If you recently gave birth (<10 days postpartum), text “BIRTH” to 902-702-6278 for more information and to sign up.
This study is funded by an IWK Health Mentored Grant and the IWK Health Ross Fund. Ethics for this project has been obtained by the IWK Health REB and Nova Scotia Health REB.

This study has been reviewed and received approval through the Research Ethics Board, University of Regina.

We’re currently looking to match Sallie, 80s, who enjoys chatting about travel and horses and spent 32 years running a therapeutic riding center. She would like help with reading, organizing, running errands, and going for leisurely walks in the Spring. She would really appreciate someone who would be willing to drive her, if possible.
Interested in volunteering for this position? Email jeff.deviller@cnib.ca and he'd be happy to answer any of your questions!

Message me.
