Math And Physics Tutor
Description
Hi, my name is Louis. In my experience, while students in grades 8 to 12 are often capable of learning school mathematics, few see this in themselves. This is why helping students outside of school should be about more than teaching what math and physics are being learned--things like how to add fractions, solve equations, and compute averages. To have an impact, students should be encouraged to become more effective math learners and, through this, to accept more personal responsibility for their learning.
I balance support for what is being learned with advice and encouragement about being a more effective learner. This means simultaneously supporting what students are learning by teaching them how to better organize their learning, understanding ways to approach challenging problems, teaching how to prepare and study for tests, and practicing how to take tests. Using individualized and small-group methods, we offer a personalized, sensible, goal-directed, and time-limited solution to suit individual needs and interests. I base instruction on proven teaching methods and monitor learning using short assessments applied during sessions; assessment results are then used to demonstrate to students how their understanding is improving with time and what still needs to be addressed.
Attending to what and how students learn is important because students who assume responsibility for learning are more successful. They are capable when faced with challenging learning situations, confident doing math and, with time, more independent and self-motivated.
