The Monthly Meeting of the Peterborough Astronomical Association's (PAA) will take place June 5th as a “Hybrid Meeting”, both online and in-person at our traditional physical location of the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services Building, Riverview Park Zoo. Nothing can stop the spread of information and knowledge by the members of the PAA, including our ability to accommodate those that can’t physically be at the meeting. Our “Novice Astronomy Classes” are focused on the practical aspects of learning about astronomy. You will be introduced to astronomy related subjects at a very basic level, but in a logical sequence. In this month’s Novice Astronomy Class, we continue with the Solar System Series with an exciting journey to the giant of our planetary family, Jupiter. Dominating the night sky with its brilliant glow, Jupiter has fascinated observers for centuries, from early astronomers tracking its motion to modern spacecraft uncovering its many secrets. More massive than all the other planets combined, Jupiter is a colossal world of swirling storms, powerful magnetic fields and intriguing moons. Its Great Red Spot, a storm larger than Earth itself, has raged for generations beneath bands of colourful clouds. Yet Jupiter is far more than just a beautiful object in the eyepiece. This gas giant may have played a crucial role in shaping the architecture of our solar system and protecting the inner planets from countless impacts. Intrigued? Join us on June 5th to explore the remarkable wonders of the solar system’s largest planet.
During the interactive segment of the class, we will examine how tenacious life can be and its ability to exploit extreme environments.
Tune in to be enlightened! If you are even remotely interested, be on-line by 6:00 p.m. to see what you can learn about exploring the Universe around you. The classes will run about 45 minutes each session, before our regular meeting resumes. There’s no obligation to stay for the meeting that follows, but you are more than welcome to if you wish.
Shortly after 7:00 p.m. we will have a presentation by PAA Sponsor, Ray Khan, entitled “New Generation of Amateur Astronomer”. Ray is the owner/operator of Khanscope Centre, Dufferin St. in Toronto and his decades of experience in the hobby will inform his presentation this evening. There will also be the usual opportunities to have your questions answered, at no charge. Coiled Basket with Woodburned Insert (Beginner/Intermediate)
Many cultures and peoples around the world have used a variety of natural materials to create baskets that are both beautiful and utilitarian. Grasses, reeds, pine needles, and bark are just a few of the examples of items that can be dried and turned into baskets. While a variety of techniques exist to join these materials, the one we will focus on in this workshop is coiling. This ancient technique involves making coils and stitching them together to make a basket. We will also be making our own wooden inserts using a drill, sander, and woodburning. Patterns will be provided for all skill levels, but if you have an image in mind, feel free to bring it along. At the end of this workshop, you will have made a small basket with natural materials and gained the fundamentals to create even more complex designs in the future.
Woven Natural Fibre Bag (Beginner/Intermediate)
Nature has so many wonderful materials to offer in our local environment that can be harvested, dried, and woven into beautiful and useful items to enjoy for years to come. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to use grasses, bark, cattails, lily leaves, wood, and more to create a woven and twined bag or purse. These can be created freeform or using a mold. If you have a shape in mind, feel free to bring along a mold (wooden block, old container, etc.). While this is a beginner class, any experience with basketry, sewing, or weaving will be an asset.

Spring Term: Woodburning – Pyrography – 4 weeks
Wednesday, April 22 to Wednesday, May 13
6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
The course will focus on learning the basics of using a woodburning tool, including how to prepare a surface for burning, transfer patterns, safety, and techniques for employing the various tips. However, students will also learn more intermediate/advanced techniques, including adding texture, highlights, and shading to a variety of images and surfaces. While patterns will be provided, students should also feel free to be creative and pursue projects of interest to them.
While all materials and tools will be provided, anyone with their own woodburning system or woodworking tools is encouraged to bring them.

Spring Term: Basketry – (Wed) 8 weeks

In this course, students will be able to deepen their understanding of locally available basketry materials and fundamental techniques. We will learn how to harvest and process local plants that can be easily found in backyards, urban neighborhoods, and other natural areas, with an emphasis on invasive species. Additionally, there will be hands-on demonstrations of key basketry techniques, such as cordage, braiding, weaving, twining, coiling, plaiting, and twill. This course is well-suited for those with basketry experience at all levels (including beginners) who want to learn how to identify, harvest, process, and use the wide variety of plants nature has to offer in Peterborough and the surrounding areas. Students are also welcome to bring any materials from their own foraging. Throughout the course, students will make 4-5 baskets from a variety of materials using various techniques.

For the last 5 years I've been performing all over the GTA, including: festivals; pride, multi-cultural, afro-fest, private functions, restaurants, bars, and producing my local show while producing tracks for local Toronto artists. This year, I'm building my independent music school from my home studio. (Big Project!) Too often, I hear about beginner students horror stories about learning in the classical vein or the lack of purpose in general lesson plans. My focus is to create a unique lesson plan for each student to maximize efficiency while incorporating my teaching style into the plan. I incorporate musical expression, technique, and theory into each lesson while taking we've learnt and reworking it into something original. Composition being the ultimate goal; as we learn a lot quicker thinking for ourselves. There are no limitations, I've taught and performed in many genres: Classical, Jazz, Rock,Pop,Reggae, Blues, Hip-hop, Gospel, Fusion, the list goes on... So who am I? I'm a 24 year old musician who's extremely passionate about ALL music. - Completed 3 years Mohawk College Applied Music program. - 5 years teaching experience. (Includes leading band rehearsal and performances) - Developed and promoted shows - Constantly studying the scripts of the great classical composers. - Most important: Patient and Understanding. The lessons I'm offering are: Guitar, Bass, Keyboard, Recording, and Drums. For generations, people have been using locally sourced and readily available materials to create baskets. In the first class of this two-part workshop, you’ll learn about a variety of local plants that can be used for basketry, as well as items that might be growing in your own yard and home or even found in the fridge. We’ll also go into detail on how to gather, prepare, and dry these items to make baskets. I’ll show a few techniques for making braids and cordage out of natural materials. Finally, we’ll look at how to make inserts with wood and nut slices. In the second half, you’ll be able to use the materials you’ve prepared to make your own small coiled basket. You’ll also learn some of the more complex stitches that can be used in this type of basketry.
While all the tools and materials you’ll need will be provided, feel free to forage locally in your own yard, neighbourhood, or even fridge for items that could become baskets. Some great materials include grasses (long, thin, and leafy are best), long pine needles, cattail leaves, reeds, dandelion stems, cornhusks, iris/crocosmia/lily/daffodil leaves (from the garden or saved from bouquets), young raspberry stalks, burdock stalks, spider plant, bamboo leaves, wild garlic stem, rhubarb stalk, leeks, and even banana skins (bring a whole eating banana if you want to learn to make lovely black cordage). Any items you’d like to work with should be brought to the first class.
If you wish, feel free to also bring your own tools, including scissors, tapestry needle, X-acto knife, old spoon, gloves, thimble, and clipboard (to hold your cordage).

For those planning to witness the Total Solar Eclipse on the afternoon of April 8th, (between 2:09 p.m. and 4:35 p.m.) please do so responsibly and safely. Never look at a partially eclipsed Sun without proper approved eye protection (marked - ISO#12312-2) or permanent damage to your eyes can occur! The Peterborough Region (north of Port Hope) is not in the path of “Totality”, but will have a deep partial eclipse phase (see attached image). Eye protection is required at all times to observe any portion of this!

The art contains twelve forms (kata) and were developed in part by Shimizu Takaji and by a committee tasked with the creation of a compact Jōdō system to be taught mainly in Kendo dojo. The result was the Zen Ken Renmei Seitei Jōdō system containing twelve forms (kata) and twelve basic techniques (kihon).
It is a great champion art for those doing other forms of Japanese Martial Arts.
Both the basic techniques and forms are drawn primarily from the koryu martial art Shinto Muso-ryu. The kata were chosen from the three first series of SMR, Omote, chudan and Ran ai as they were seen to best represent the art. Ten of these kata were taken from the existing SMR kata but with minor modifications as to better suit the requirements of the Kendo Federation. The two other kata was created specifically for the new Seitei Jōdō system and was not part of the original SMR-system. Seitei Jodo is today taught as a part of the Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei (All Japan Kendo Federation).

To continue my career in this field, I am currently pursuing a degree in Integrated Mathematics and Computer Science at Ontario Tech University.
With roughly two years of tutoring experience, my approach is to help all students thoroughly understand concepts, rather than just memorize formulas or techniques. I believe that this is a key to long-term success in any subject. To achieve this, I use a variety of teaching methods and resources in my lessons. I also encourage my students to ask questions and actively participate in the learning process, this helps them develop a deeper understanding of the subject and makes the learning process more enjoyable.
Knowing that there are different learning styles, I make an effort to tailor my lessons to individual needs. For example, if a student prefers visual aid, I might use more diagrams and graphs in my lessons, while someone more hands on might require a greater number of interactive activities or problem-solving exercises.
Overall, my goal as a tutor is to share my knowledge and expertise in a way that helps all learners succeed.
