Herd Dispersal
Description
Rehoming my herd of pigs. I live very remote and 3 ferries from the mainland, and am finding it difficult to balance rising Feed costs and trying to connect pigs with buyers with the many ferries. I do not have a good specialty butcher anymore, which helps to highlight the carcass into specialty cuts. I did very well with this breed when I lived near a higher density area, with access to good butchers, and it was quite profitable before my move to my current location.
I have 7 sows, 3 boars, and 20 piglets.
These are Ossabaw Island Hogs, a medium sized breed that excels in a woodland and pasture setting. The meat is dark and flavourful, these are true heritage hogs, sized down to a manageable size due to natural selection on thier home island. Pigs from my herd have been able to be registered with the Livestock Conservancy. These pigs don't need much - page wire fence, one hot wire along the bottom, and draft free housing though moms also like choosing a nest in a forest setting. Moms are very maternal and dads are also paternal - I had one boar who would stay nearby a new litter of piglets, even forgoing his dinner so mom could go eat with the herd.
Package deal and delivery for a group purchase. Sale will come with ongoing mentorship, and i will help with the registration process if interested. I am on Texada Island but am traveling to the lower Mainland and Vancouver Island in the near future. I will also consider travel to the interior. Price negotiable depending on package.
