Director of Technology
Description
Our Client is a software company in the eyecare space, providing Canadian doctors and the industry at large leading solutions for PMS, electronic health records, ordering, and booking.
We seek a hands-on leader to join our team and be the ultimate owner of all technical aspects of Wink including development, level 3 support, and infrastructure. In this role, you will build and lead talented agile software development teams working in diverse areas such as PMS, electronic health, technical system integration, and new service offerings. You will balance solid technical implementation with revenue driving KPIs and timely delivery. The ideal candidate has strong communication, leadership and interpersonal skills and a true passion for software engineering.
We are looking for someone that is able to dive deep technically and has a proven track record of developing scalable industry hardened technology. We seek a person with confidence and entrepreneurial spirit who can inspire positivity, accountability and ownership in others. Effective communication to both business and technical audiences is critical to be successful.

Responsibilities
• Gain a deep technical understanding of all aspects of the system – its code, constraints, & architecture.
• Own business and technical KPIs while working within constraints of budget, time, and resources.
• Direct software delivery of combined onshore, vendor, and offshore delivery teams.
• Anticipate bottlenecks, make tradeoffs, and balance business needs versus technical constraints.
• Nurture an environment that favors pragmatism, testability, measurement, and a "get it done" attitude.
• Communicate technical status in a concise, accurate manner to executives and stakeholders
• Interview, recruit, retain and grow technical talent.
• Discover and remove architectural roadblocks that are impeding the delivery team's progress.
• Provide regular technical feedback and advice as a member of the leadership team.
• Own the team’s releases, features, platforms, infrastructure, and delivery dates.
• Encourage best practices in software teams such as code reviews, branching and merging strategies, separation of concerns, encapsulation, and inversion of control.
• Stay current with industry trends and incorporate best of breed technology, patterns, and methodologies.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• When needed, go hands on with code, logs, cloud, CI/CD, deployments, etc.
• Lead sound decision making regarding tradeoffs for technology, architecture, and platforms.
• Manage and mentor direct reports (annual reviews, goal setting, advocacy).
• Meet setbacks and adversity with positivity, creativity, and resilience.
Qualifications
• 10 years of progressively expanding leadership experience managing agile technical teams.
• 10 years of hands-on development experience with Java on Linux.
• 5 years of hands-on experience with MySQL / MariaDB
• 3 years of experience deploying, monitoring, and assuring stability in the cloud (Azure or AWS)
• Strong technical skills and a deep understanding of modern software development (CI/CD, source control, patterns, agile delivery).
• Positive attitude, friendly and communicative, and ability to work easily with people from all cultural backgrounds.
• Deep grasp of practical software architecture (object orientation, database design, messaging, and networking).
• Strong knowledge of web fundamentals (HTTP, response codes, REST, and implementation with Java).
• Ability to lead, inspire, delegate to and collaborate closely with teams, leadership, and product.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience in the health care and/or eyecare industry preferred.
• Experience with Java Swing preferred.
• Experience leading offshore or combined onshore / offshore teams preferred.
