Grade VG- 3.5 Price $ 5.00
Grade VG 4 Price $ 5.00
He's Back! the cover proclaimed. BEHIND THE MASK : C.C. and Heather are kidnapped to Gold's South American hidden city. Fine conclusion of 1st Gold story. First clear look at Gold. 1st time C.C. is shown without his mask; 1st reference to his Native Indian heritage. Incredible George Freeman art; his first pencils on C.C. (and not as stylized as later).
Back Up: superhero CATMAN; 1st app. and origin (after advertising him as early as issue #1). Nice Comely art. Beautiful colour on both stories! Extras: Canuck Kid strip; first fan contributed gallery; one-shot The Beavers comic strip by Dave (Cerebus) Sim and Gene (many Marvel titles) Day.Captain Cannuck Vol 1#6 1979
Grade VG Price $5.00
hThe feature story was titled Search – Captain Canuck returns to Gold’s South American hidden city to rescue Lord West and finally put the kibosh on Gold. Drug-bust subplot involving Redcoat, Kebec and Stardance in the Mediterranean begins, continues into next issue. This time around, the backup feature was The Smugglers an illustrated text story of Catman written and pencilled by Richard Comely with inks by George Freeman.C .CC. returns to Gold's South American hidden city to rescue Lord West and finally put the kibosh on Gold. Drug-bust subplot involving Redcoat, Kebec and Stardance in the Mediterranean begins, continues into next issue. Last religious reference. Last Comely art on C.C. (Freeman inks).
Back Up:CATMAN; 2nd (and last straight appearance); off-beat technique -- mainly a text piece with some illustrations.Captain Cannuck Vol 1#11 1980
Grade VG+ 4.5 Price $5.00exllent CHARIOTS OF FIRE begins. OPERATION EXTERMINATION&: C.C. investigates a possible security leak, only to discover the leak is a little boy being controlled by aliens -- the very aliens who had accidentally given C.C. augmented power. Trying to get the boy and his dad to safety, C.C. is beset by a mob of ordinary people, under the mind-control of the aliens. Nice beginning to the series' most flamboyant epic; eerie and exciting. Interesting idea that, since the action takes place in Quebec city, some of the dialogue is in French (and it probably helps to have a rudimentary grasp of the language).
Back Up: BEYONDcontinues.Captain Cannuck Vol 1#12 1980
Grade VG 4 Price $5.00
TIME FACTOR" ("CHARIOTS OF FIRE continues"): As C.I.S.O. tries to alert other governments to the alien threat, C.C. attempts to make contact and to reason with them (a very interesting idea, given that most heroes in such stories immediately plot to blow up the alien baddies). However, C.C. falls through a time portal with bad-guy alien Nyro-Ka and they both end up in New Brunswick, circa the 11th Century. Meanwhile, everyone else thinks C.C. is dead. Gold has a cameo. Last Comely script.
Back Up: "BEYOND" continues.Captain Cannuck Vol 1#13 1981 2 copies of this book
Grade VG-3.5 Price $5.00
Grade VG 4 Price $5.00
CHARIOTS OF FIRE" concludes. "EXILES": While earth governments unite to battle the alien menace, and outfit a moon base for an assault on the alien spaceship, C.C. -- still in the 11th Century -- helps some Micmac Indians battle Vikingg invaders. He manages to return to his time...on board the alien mother ship! His actions save the day, but his only hope for survival is to leap back into the time portal for a destination...unknown. 1st Freeman script is good, and the historical storyline (and how it's presented) is intended as a homage to Canadian-born comic strip legend Harold ("Prince Valiant") Foster. Many supporting characters from the series crop up. New cover logo. No Back Up this issue.Captain Cannuck Vol 1#14 1981
Grade VG 4 Price $8.00
FIRE-FIGHT: C.C. stumbles on a deserted contemporary Ontario town, is drafted to fight a raging forest fire, and gets involved in attempted murder and the stealing of an ancient Aztec artifact. The development of the (surprisingly complex) story, mingling the various elements (the eerie opening few pages --with its macabre foreshadowing -- the man-against-nature fire-fight, and the man-against-man climax) and an actually bonafide mystery-detective story (plus an edge-of-the-seat climax) make this arguably one of the best of the issues! A nice job by Freeman on only his second outing as scripter. Intended as a change of direction story, with C.C. now in modern times (and the one weakness, as it's not altogether representative of the body of the issues).
Back Up: BEYOND continues...and is to-be-continued (eventually it was concluded in the Beyond graphic novel published in 2016).

Grade FNVF 7 Price $10.27Magazine sized issues 8X11
Color Troll Patrol insert, Philo Photon and the Troll Patrol!; (scrpt by Bill DuBay, pencils by Michael Golden, inks by Rudy Nebres). ;The Goblin; (script by DuBay, art by Lee Elias);Tin man!; (script by DuBay, art by Nebres), ;The Micro-Buccaneers; (script by Timothy Moriarty, art by Luis Bermejo), and ;Wizard Wormglow; (script by Moriarty, art by Abel Laxamana). Nebres cover. Cover price $2.25. B&W with 8 page color insertThe last title launched by Warren Publishing before it's untimely demise was this real oddity, The Goblin. An "editorial" proclaimed:
Warren is finally making its full-length foray into the super-hero field with THE GOBLIN! It's the newest magazine and it's devoted to the craziest concentration of super-heroes imaginable. Yes super-heroes...those long-johned leading men we all grew up with. Now we figure it's time for them to grow up with us.
The title story is devoted to The Goblin himself by Bill DuBay & Lee Elias is quite unusual in focusing on a black family with one of the able to turn into a mystical character with help of a white ghost. A mixture of social commentary about slum landlords with UFO's and out of time US soldiers from the North African theatre make a strangely compelling tale.
Next up is Tin Man,also by Bill DuBay with art from Ruby Nebres. Reminiscent of the film The Day the Earth Stood Still, there's a small twist which sees a conspiracy by the US President and his Soviet counterpart to keep the world peace.
Next up is a four colour supplement Phil Photon and the Troll Patrol which is seemingly influenced by the British 2000 AD. I remain unsure as to why their spaceship looks like a hairdryer.
The final two stories The Micro-Buccaneers and in particular Wizard Wormglow (both by Timothy Moriarity) were frankly dreadful.
Intended to be bi-monthly, The Goblin lasted just three issues.

Beowulf GN (1984 First Comics) Adapted by Jerry Bingham #1-1ST
Grade 8 VF near new Price $10.141st printing. By Jerry Bingham. it's the exciting adventure that made the hero a legend. Adapted by noted noted artist Jerrty Bingham, known for his work on Marvel Comics, Heavy Metal, and First Comics. Softcover, The original sword-wielding barbarian - in the first faithful & brilliantly illustrated adaption of the complete epic saga! 8 1/2-in. x 11-in., 48 pages, full color. Cover price $5.95.
The first adaptation that followed the poem’s storyline fairly fully, at least in regards to the major battles, appeared in January of 1984. This is the graphic novel Beowulf, published by First Comics and adapted by Jerry Bingham. Bingham not only wrote the adaptation (“freely,” as the credits list it) but also did the art, including the coloring, which was and still is fairly atypical in comics, and the quality of his work on this book was acknowledged by his peers as it led to him winning the Jack Kirby Award for Best Graphic Album in 1984. The specific translation Bingham used in uncertain, his recollection being that he used at least three different sources with the main being from an older volume (he describes it as being “an old book back in the ‘80s”) of an Oxford English Library compilation. He notes that the changes he made to the wording were intended to make the story easier for younger readers, and his main goal was to get the audience who was becoming interested in Conan with the release of the first movie and who had been reigniting interest in the Lord of the Rings trilogy to see “where it all started.”
Bingham notes that for the central character, he was trying for “a decidedly Conan, Viking look” which in many ways is similar to both Gustovich and Villamonte’s versions, but his art is greatly enhanced by the oversized nature of its magazine-sized format and the attention to detail that Bingham pays both to the flow of the action and to the details of the poem he is adapting. Here, Beowulf is physically larger than his men but slightly smaller than Grendel and the mother, and is attired with a fur loincloth and chainmail. An obvious omission is the lack of mention of characters such as Unferth and Wealtheow, likely because the emphasis is on the fights themselves, which is also likely the reason there is no use of any of the ideas found in the poem’s digressions. The adaptation ends with the death of Beowulf and avoids details of the burial. Despite any irritation one may have at the details that Bingham omits, this is one of the few that incorporates some smaller details that are found in the poem, such as the boar’s head emblem on Beowulf’s helmet, as well as details that are potentially more important, such as the use of runic language on the hilt of the giant’s sword.

Ectokid: Who Is the Wachowskis and Clive Barker's Forgotten Marvel Hero?
Before they made The Matrix, the Wachowskis worked on an obscure Marvel Comics horror hero who was created by horror icon Clive Barker.
Although they are now known for the iconic Matrix film series, the Wachowskis once wrote for Marvel's Razorline, a short-lived imprint based on concepts created by horror icon Clive Barker. As one of many new comics lines of the '90s, Barker designed this line to reflect his particularly Lovecraftian horror-based take on superheroes.
While Barker might be known for creating horror monsters like Hellraiser's Pinhead, Razorline's characters were still very much heroes, and the imprint's youngest hero was Ectokid, a teenager who traversed into the dimension of ghosts in a series largely written by the WachowskisCEREBUS AS SPAWN PRINT David Sim 1992
Grade VF 8+ Price $10.00
Back in the day when Spawn was considered the vanguard of the self-publishing movement, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller and Dave Sim all teamed up with Todd McFarlane to create four successive issues of SPAWN. It was a way to show solidarity — and for the writers to make some pretty good money, given SPAWN’s huge sales at the time.
However as we all know, things that were so happy and cooperative at the time didn’t stay so. Gaiman and McFarlane had a falling out, so to speak, and Gaiman began a lawsuit over the rights to SPAWN #9 which introduced the Angela character.
According to some PR we just got, the Dave Sim issue, #10, which saw Cerebus and Spawn teaming up, is returning to print for the first time in 16 years in SPAWN ORIGINS COLLECTION: DELUXE EDITION VOL. 1 HC. Apprently McFarlane and Sim worked out a non-exclusive deal. The oversized collection will also reproduce the Moore and Miller issues….but NOT #9.
