Research Engineer/Scientist, Materials & Corrosion

Job Description:Help lead the Global Clean Energy Transition! C-FER is positioned to support the growing hydrogen economy and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) projects. We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join a dynamic team of engineers and technologists to qualify and test materials and equipment for use in hydrogen production, storage and transportation applications. Utilizing C-FER's state-of-the-art Special Environments equipment and infrastructure, this role will work with leading green Net-Zero energy companies to conduct a variety of engineering assessments and full-scale equipment qualification testing projects at high pressure, temperature and load conditions in toxic, corrosive, explosive or other extreme environments to test and demonstrate the latest innovations in hydrogen and CCUS. This role reports to the Manager of the Drilling & Completions Department and is expected to work with minimal supervision with adequate goal setting and limited review. This role will include technical as well as sales goals as it is expected that the successful candidate will develop relationships with our clients to better understand their testing and qualification needs. C-FER operates out of two Edmonton offices, both of which include full-scale testing facilities. This role would be primarily based out of our Main location at 200 Karl Clark Road, however occasional travel to our East location at 3712 Roper Road may be required. What's in it for you? The salary and title for this position will be commensurate with education and experience. This role is responsible for: * Designing and modeling engineering systems and unique testing systems; * Leading project teams consisting of junior engineers and technologists; * Creating and maintaining project schedules to track costs and schedule (e.g. in MS Project); * Reporting project progress to clients and internal stakeholders; * Preparation of technical proposals and reports for clients and other project stakeholders; * Establishing, developing and managing relationships with clients; * Conducting sub-scale and full-scale tests under combined loading and extreme environmental conditions; and, * Researching the latest standardized material testing methodologies, guidelines and safety standards. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following qualifications: * Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Materials Science, Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering; other science or engineering degrees (e.g. Aerospace, Environmental, Process, Sustainable Energy) would be considered with equivalent relevant research experience; * Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following fields: material/metallurgical design, improvement or evaluation; corrosion; fracture mechanics; hydrogen storage or transport; fluid or gas process design; or, surface science; * Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or P.Eng designation with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) * Solid modelling and/or engineering drawing experience (e.g. Solidworks, AutoCAD, Inventor) * Mechanical aptitude and a "hands-on" approach to learning and task execution; * Demonstrated project management experience; * Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and drive for continuous learning; * Demonstrated ability to build long-term relationships with clients, colleagues and other stakeholders; * Excellent written and verbal communication skills; * Strong goal orientation with a desire to compete in the marketplace based on technical skills; * The ability to legally work in Canada for C-FER; * The ability to travel outside of Canada; and, * Demonstrate values in line with C-FER's 6Cs (Courage; Communication, Collaboration; Careers; Challenges; and Clients). In addition, one or more of the following qualifications will be considered an asset: * MSc or PhD Degree with applied experimental research; * Experience in the Energy Industry, particularly in a research and development or in a new technology development environment; * Mechanical, chemical or materials testing experience in a lab environment; * Experience with fluid and gas process design or process modeling via Aspen/HYSYS, ChemPro, OLI Systems, etc; * Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and/or Fault Tree Analysis; and, * Prior experience providing consulting services.
