Ketone Supplements in Type 2 Diabetes
Description
What is the purpose of this study?
Our team is working on new research investigating if consuming a ketone or placebo supplement for 90 days can improve glycemic control and immune function in Type 2 Diabetes. The main objective of this study is to determine if it is feasible for people with type 2 diabetes to consume a ketone supplement drink regularly for 90 days. The results of this study will be used to guide future research looking into how longer-term consumption of ketone drinks can impact the health, specifically the blood glucose levels, of individuals living with, or at elevated risk of, type 2 diabetes.
What does this study involve?
This study is being conducted remotely (i.e., you will interact with researchers via video call) and you will be asked to visit a local lab for blood draws at the beginning and of the trial. You will be asked to consume a ketone supplement or a placebo three times a day for 90 days. Study materials will be shipped to you. The study involves approximately 5 hours of your time over 90 days.
Who can participate in this study?
You may be able to participate in this study if you:
1) are 30-69 years of age
2) have had a type 2 diabetes diagnosis by your physician
3) have stable use of glucose-lowering medications for at least three months
4) are being able to read and understand English.
You cannot participate in this study if you:
1) are a competitively trained endurance athlete
2) are actively attempting to gain or lose weight
3) have a history of mental illness or existing neurological disease(s), cardiovascular events (i.e., heart attack, stroke) in the last 2 years
4) have hypoglycemia, irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease
5) are currently using insulin or SGLT2 inhibitors
6) are using more than 2 classes of glucose-lowering medication
7) are currently following a ketogenic diet or taking ketone supplements
8) are unable to commit for a 90-day trial
9) are currently taking natural or over-the-counter supplements specifically designed to lower blood sugar (e.g., berberine, bitter melon).
