Legal Assistant / Law Student Position (Part-Time)

KLD Law is looking to hire a part-time Legal Assistant or Law Student to assist in daily operations. Duties and hourly rate will depend on the experience level.
The ideal candidate will be located in Winnipeg, Manitoba and is available for in-person work once a week (date and times are flexible). The remainder of the work can be completed remotely.
Main duties will include:
- Administrative activities such as filing, scanning, and organizing.
- Typing, formatting, and editing business and legal documents.
- Preparing draft documents using templates.
- Assisting with accounting, bookkeeping, payroll and billing (previous experience is an asset but training will be provided).
- Assisting with managing KLD Law’s website and other promotional material.
Depending on the legal experience of the candidate, the following duties may also be included in the position under supervision of the lawyer.
- Drafting communications with clients
- Drafting briefing notes
- Conducting legal research
- Assisting with editing and footnoting legal opinions
- Drafting legal precedents
- Using templates to prepare legal documents such as estate documents
The following skills are required:
- Proficient with Zoom and MS Teams for remote work.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite including use of sections, headings, table of contents, and formatting in both word and excel.
- Experience with or comfort with learning new software including:
o Adobe Pro
o Clio
o Quickbooks Online
o TextExpander
o MS Defender & MS Office Business Premium and any associate security settings / processes.
- Able to follow instructions and pay attention to detail.
- Ability to think creatively and anticipate the needs of the supervising lawyer.
The following skills are an asset:
- Any prior administrative assistant experience.
- Any legal education or experience. Current law school students are encouraged to apply. First year students are welcome.
- Experience in wills and estates law or Indigenous law.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities.
- Experience or education in business administration, bookkeeping or accounting.
Hours will vary weekly depending on experience. The length of the position is open and flexible to meet the needs of someone still in school or looking for a more permanent part-time position. Start date is flexible but is ideally early August. Ongoing contract is able to accommodate exams and school schedules. Potential for full-time summer employment for summer of 2024 depending on experience.
