The volunteers will be working again with the Reykjavík municipality in two of the main skiing and recreational areas in the capital region of Iceland, Bláfjöll (or the Blue Mountains) and Skálafell.
In Skálafell, the ski slopes are turned into a Bike park during summertime and mountain bike enthusiasts can nourish their passion. The main tasks will include renovation and maintenance work on the bike trails; mainly raking and scraping them up. Other possible tasks may be related to general cleaning of the area.
In the Blue Mountains, the main tasks will be maintaining the slopes and preparing them for the next ski season. The city and a few sports associations run lodges and mountain huts there and they might also need some renovation work, such as painting and/or cleaning.
The working plan is flexible and it will depend on the needs of our local host. Volunteers need to be motivated to work mainly outdoors on physical jobs and under changing weather conditions.
The project happens around the summer solstice, when the sun hardly sets and the nights are almost as bright as the days. The bright nights are magical and staying awake enjoying the surroundings is a unique experience. During the time of the project, participants will have the opportunity to experience the midnight sun as there are 24 hours of light even if the sun sets for shorts periods of time.
Dates:
June 18 - June 28, 2023

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most widespread types of anxiety disorder. SAD begins early in life and affects 2.5 million Canadians in one year. It can result in a variety of co-occurring conditions such as depression and substance use disorder. To better understand the causes of SAD, it is important to further investigate the brain biology of SAD, and develop new and effective treatments.
For this study, we are looking for individuals aged 18 to 40 years old who currently experience social anxiety disorder. We will use brain imaging techniques, including PET (positron emission tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans to observe and study whether an important brain network, the endocannabinoid system, contributes to SAD. This will help us learn more about the biological mechanisms of this condition and also potentially guide development of new treatment options.
The study includes:
1. A pre-screening phone call (approximately 25 minutes)
2. A screening assessment visit (approximately 4 hours)
3. One MRI scan (approximately 2 hours)
4. One PET scan (approximately 4 hours)
5. Cognitive tests (approximately 2 hours)
6. Take home questionnaires (approximately 1 hour)To be eligible, volunteers must meet the following criteria:
• be 18 - 40 years old
• experience extreme shyness or anxiety in social settings / in front of others
• no current substance use disorders
• no blood clotting disorder or use of anticoagulant medication
• no unstable medical condition
• no neurological illness (seizures, epilepsy) or head trauma
• no metal implants in body
• not pregnant / breastfeeding
• not claustrophobic
• not exposed to radiation in the past 12 months exceeding the permissible limit for subjects participating in researchVolunteers will receive compensation for time, including transportation and meals.

I am wounded in leg and very limited on mobility. Swollen foot prevents walking on lawn and stones. It takes others 15-20 minutes to carry white kitchen bags about 50 feet across flat lawn. I pass the bags outside to you as needed. Can be a dozen bags but nothing heavy or glass. I provide you with large vinyl gloves. No tears or leaks in bags, safe hygienics. I will compensate you for your fuel and travel time. I may be slow on answering your initial contact. I will respond with my phone number and I require telephone contact for the meet so I am prepared. Thank you for considering me. Portage and Valley Way area. Robert.
