Volunteers needed to teach English.
Based on the volunteer’s skills and education, it is also possible to volunteer as teachers’ aid for subjects like Math, World History, Environment, Grammar, Science, etc. This project offers the opportunity for volunteers to assist students of Elementary Schools located in rural areas, where access to English teachers is limited. The volunteer work consists in teaching basic English and Environmental lessons in under-resourced rural schools from the Coast, Highlands and the Amazon. To those who have good level of Spanish, we offer to assist the children who have learning problems helping them in reading, writing, grammar, mathematics in the afternoons after school (mainly in the schools from the Coast). The schools do not have didactic materials for English lessons; volunteers are responsible to prepare these materials for the benefit of the schools, to prepare exams and evaluations, as well as, for each grade, a report about the students' achievements and goals must be given to the Principals of the schools.
Duration of the project: Minimum time for volunteering is 5 months, up to 10 months. Volunteers can apply for the following periods:
In the Highlands and the Amazon: from September to the end of June;
In the Coastal region: from May to the end of January.
Special requirements: Basic knowledge of Spanish is required.

Study title: Remembering the past, imagining the future, and personal thoughts in PTSD
We are looking for people to participate in a research study run at Toronto Metropolitan University that explores memory and future thinking in PTSD. We are recruiting 35-50 people who experienced a traumatic event but do not have PTSD or other current mental health symptoms. We are also looking for folks who experienced a traumatic event in the past 1-5 years; meaning that at least 1 year has passed since the event but that it took place in the past 5 years. We will compare this to 35-50 people with PTSD.
Participating in this study first involves a brief telephone interview to see if you are eligible. If you are, then we would invite you to a testing session on videoconference where you would complete mental health interviews, surveys, and tasks that measure memory and thinking. If we invite you to participate, this session will last between 1.5 and 2 hours and you will receive $40 for your time.
To be eligible for this study, you should be:
- Between the ages of 30-65

Photography, Environment and Aurora Hunting in Iceland
If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for you!
While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by the project coordinators. In this project, volunteers will support a fishing community to protect, preserve and plant more mangrove forests, and improve the income generation opportunities for local fishermen. International volunteers have been nursing and planting more than 50,000 mangroves every year. The presence of volunteers has also enabled the community to become a very attractive eco-tourism site since 2014. It attracts thousands of tourists every year, so besides earning from fishing, local people are now also providing services for tourists to generate more income.
The project welcomes individuals who are passionate about the environment and hands-on conservation work. Volunteers will be working as active promoters of environmental and sea life preservation, and enjoying the natural environment at the same time.
Volunteers' main tasks will be organizing workshops with local people to promote the importance of mangrove forests to people, collecting mangrove seeds, seedlings, and planting mangroves in a protected area while maintaining the already planted mangroves.

2 weeks volunteering in Sólheimar, Iceland‘s first and only eco-village. The heart of the Sólheimar ideology is to give all individuals a fair chance and to maximize their potential. By focusing on individuals' abilities instead of their limitations, Sólheimar aims to create the space for each resident to take every opportunity that arises for each person to grow and develop. Versatility is the strength of Sólheimar so people with special needs that reside here will always be the center of the community. This works through the idea of reverse integration: those without special needs adapt to the abilities of those who do, they can work together to make their community an equal and sustainable one. The foundation of the ideology of Sólheimar derives from the visions and lifework of Sesselja herself.
Sólheimar is a pioneer in practicing organic farming. In Sólheimar, there is an organically certified greenhouse, forestry, and arboretum. Other environmentally-friendly projects in Sólheimar include geothermal energy and recycling.
The main work in this international volunteer project will be in forestry called Ölur and also in the greenhouses which are called Sunna. Volunteers will be working in the greenhouses planting and harvesting vegetables, doing weed control and sometimes you will also be gardening. The work might involve work around the property, painting or fixing things. During the winter, volunteers will also have to help remove snow and keep the walk paths clear for the residents.Project dates: December 25, 2023 - January 8, 2024

Embark on a Journey Towards Mental Well-Being. Join Our Research: Feasibility Study on Long-Term Light and Ion Therapy for Depression Maintenance Treatment.
The UBC Mood Disorders Centre at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health invites participants for a groundbreaking study delving into the efficacy of non-medication treatments—light therapy and ion therapy—as maintenance options for major depression. Our focus is on understanding the factors influencing these treatments as alternatives to medications, specifically for individuals with Major Depressive Disorders aiming to discontinue antidepressant treatment.
We are seeking individuals who:
Are 19-65 years old
Meet the criteria for major depressive disorder (not bipolar disorder) and have experienced two or more depressive episodes
Currently use antidepressants for at least 3 months, up to 12 months, with no recent dose changes
Are interested in or considering stopping antidepressant treatment
Are in a state of well-being (no longer experiencing depression) and in remission, as confirmed by a clinical interview
Do not exhibit a seasonal pattern of depressive episodes (seasonal affective disorder)
Have no other major medical or psychiatric conditions (except for major depressive disorder)
Do not have a current or recent (within the past 6 months) issue with substance use.Participation involves daily use of a bright light device or ion device provided by our clinic for 6 months. Additionally, participants will regularly complete self-rated scales and meet with the study doctor for assessments. Notably, half of the treatment devices are inactive (placebo), providing a 1 in 2 chance of receiving an active or inactive device.
Participants will receive $15 per in-person study visit to offset participation costs.
This study, led by Dr. Raymond Lam at the Mood Disorders Centre, UBC Hospital, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in mental health.
For more information and enrollment details, please contact us at Lam.MDDResearch2@ubc.ca.

If you love nature, want to have a great time by the beautiful beaches, at the same time enjoying all the amenities of a hotel and witnessing the magical spectacle of natural miracles that has been reoccurring for millions of years... then this project is for you!
The aim of the project is to protect the sea turtles with the help of volunteers who will be cooperating with a team of biologists. Up to now, the project has been quite successful and has reached extraordinary results. Participating in marine turtle conservation is a great opportunity to discover the rather charming life of sea turtles.
There are five species of turtles arriving to this area: Negra (Black Turtle), Golfina (Olive Ridley Turtle), Laud (Leatherback Turtle), Carey (Hawksbill Turtle) and more! The size of the turtles varies from 1 meter to 2.4 meters long and the weight from 40 kg to 500 kg. Every turtle makes a nest of around 150 eggs.
The main work consists in patrolling the beaches at night. The working hours are from 8:00pm to 8:00am, four days per week, for an average of thirty hours. Depending on the number of turtles that come ashore, two teams might be formed among the volunteers. This way, each group will be taking turns, working one night and taking the next night off for recovery. In addition, the weekends are also spared for resting. The goal is to find the adult turtles and collect their eggs, to move the eggs to a protected place called Vivero and release newborn baby turtles into the sea when they hatch. Activities must be carried out at night since turtles do not go out of the ocean during the day (because of natural predators, it is safer for turtles to get out of the ocean in the dark). The group will also take part in the reconstruction of some of the most important turtle camps in the region.

One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers and travellers!
You will visit local projects focused on the environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a community dinner or a visit to a recycling centre, a geothermal power plant, a museum or exhibition. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, pandemic-related restrictions, as well as availability of our partners.
You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the project, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

In the Highlands and the Amazon: from September to the end of June;
In the Coastal region: from May to the end of January.
Special requirements: Basic knowledge of Spanish is required.

I am reaching out for a dear friend of mine from Ontario who has found her and her young son living in a travel trailer on a rural property.
She is a healthcare worker, who like many of us are living hand to mouth. She has been very active in the Mutual Aid Advocacy and has helped many people in need, all while she is doing her best to stay afloat.
This is her second attempt for help before the snow and cold really settles in. Unfortunately she was taken advantage of by an online scam and lost the money she has saved and raised. An absolutely devastating blow.
The current electrical that she is hooked into does not allow for her to run her heaters while she cooks or uses other electrical appliances or devices. She has done her best to insulate their trailer. The propane system needs repair so she is reliant on electricity.
She is trying to fundraise for an upgrade to the electricity to the property.
So please, if you have a little extra, even $10.00, it would really help her and her little boy out. It only takes a few minutes to make this winter comfortable and safe for them while she saves for a home.
These are trying times and the costs of living are forcing many people out of their homes. No one in this country should have to live without this basic necessity. Let’s take care of each other.
