The purpose of our study is to examine if moderate or intense exercise is an effective treatment in depressed youth, and if so, if one provides a greater benefit than the other. We’d also like to better understand the changes that occur in the brain as a result of aerobic exercise – also known as cardio exercise.
Participants aged 16-24 years will be randomized into either a moderate or high intensity exercise group in which they will be required to attend a guided cardio-based session at the hospital 3 times per week for a total of 12 consecutive weeks. Each session will last ~45 min.
We will also ask you to come in for three additional visits before beginning the exercise program so that we can perform several assessments.
During the first visit, you would meet with a clinician or researcher and carry out a psychiatric interview, self-report questionnaires, and undergo a baseline physical fitness assessment. This visit is expected to last ~3hrs.
Within 1 week of this visit, you will return 2 more times so that we can measure your brain activity and structure using two common, non-invasive methods.
The first is called EEG – it involves placing sensors on your head to measure brain electrical activity. You will be asked to complete a few computerized tasks while connected to the EEG. This will last ~1.5 hr.
On a separate day, we will also measure your brain structure and function using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). You will be asked to complete a few computerized tasks similar to the EEG session while inside the MRI machine. This visit will last ~ 2 hr.
All of these visits will be repeated at the end of the 12 week exercise program. You will also be asked to come for another brief visit after the half-way point, at week 6, to again meet with a researcher or clinician, and repeat a few questionnaires.
All testing will be carried out at the Royal Ottawa Hospital on Carling Avenue. Your data will be kept private and confidential, and you have the right to withdraw from the study without penalty at any time. Lastly, you will be paid up to a maximum total of $210 CDN for your time and effort according to the number of experimental sessions attended.
If interested, please email brainlab@theroyal.ca or 613-722-6521 extension 6254.

The volunteers will be working on a countryside project in the West of Iceland, doing nature-conservation and environment-oriented tasks. We have been cooperating with the Icelandic Forest Service and our groups of volunteers have been helping out for 15 years in different locations all around the country; with very good results for the participants, the projects and the Icelandic nature conservation and reforestation efforts. The main tasks will be to maintain hiking paths, build stairs, make and put up signs. Volunteers will also put up benches and tables in the forest. Other tasks will be to trim branches and beautify groves that are located near hiking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging the surroundings and in addition our volunteers’ work helps to improve safety for visitors.
No previous experience is necessary, but the work is demanding and requires a good physical condition. As it is outdoors work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned.

A CHRISTMAS SURPRISE !!!
Hello fellow neighbors. I am asking for help for my dad as a surprise. They 're fridge and cupboards are bare. Food is scarce.
Since my mother died 4.5 years ago, my dad's income has drastically dropped.
He is in a rough neighborhood where his car got vandalized and then hit by a snow plow totalling his vehicle all in the course of last year. With no proof he had to cover most of the expense. He financed a new car because he can't walk distances. The car is more expensive but it was the cheapest one he could get
They haven't really been able to have a good Christmas.
He helps some women in the neighborhood who finish work late by driving them home to ensure they're safety. He has taken care of my son and adopted him when he was 2 years old. He struggles on CPP paying expenses for 2 other family members apart from himself. My brother only works part-time, leaving my dad paying for his food on his little bit of income.
I am posting this hoping that some people who are better off, can maybe help them out and surprise them with a good Christmas .
I am in school and on social assistance I want to help them out but I simply can't. I struggle just to make my ends meet as single mom with my 10 month old daughter.
They could use food and whatever else you may think of.
My dad is too proud to ask people for help. The city doesn't give much in terms of a Christmas hamper. There's just too many people in need.He barely make's it each month. Sometimes his fridge is completely empty and cupboards will have only a few cans inside.
He was a hard worker in his younger years and now works hard to survive. He severed a tendent in his thumb many years ago and then got all sorts of health problems. He is an amazing dad and man, always thinking of others before himself.
I am hoping he can have a chance to be thought of by someone else.
At the moment my son (15 years old) doesn't have a winter jacket, I have been looking through thrift stores trying to find a good one. He's 15 years old and picky. I haven't found one I can afford that's to his liking. I feel terrible that I can't help my family in their times of need.
Thank you for your time
Happy holidays, cheers to all of you

Our English Conversation Group (ECG) has been helping newcomers practise and expand their everyday English since 1995. All we ask of our volunteers is that they have a decent command of English and a pleasant disposition.
On Monday evenings, volunteers and newcomers meet in a public place in old Ottawa East for one-on-one conversations. These conversations are relaxed and informal. You will meet new people, learn more about other cultures, and do a good deed in the process.

Volunteers are needed nationwide to teach English. Based on the volunteer’s skills and education, it is also possible to volunteer as teachers’ aid for subjects like Math, World History, Environment, Grammar, Science, etc. This project offers the opportunity for volunteers to assist students of Elementary Schools located in rural areas, where access to English teachers is limited.
The volunteer work consists in teaching basic English and Environmental lessons in rural schools with no resources, from the Coast, Highlands and Amazon. To those who have good level of Spanish, we offer to assist the children who have learning problems helping them in reading, writing, grammar, mathematics in the afternoons after school (mainly in the schools from the Coast). The schools do not have didactic materials for English lessons; volunteers are responsible to prepare these materials for the benefit of the schools, to prepare exams and evaluations, as well as, for each grade, a report about the students' achievements and goals must be given to the Principals of the schools.
Duration of the project: Minimum time for volunteering is 5 months, up to 10 months. Volunteers can apply for the following periods:
In the Highlands and the Amazon: from September to the end of June;
In the Coastal region: from May to the end of January.
Special requirements: Basic knowledge of Spanish is required.
