We are seeking a Civil Works Inspector for a municipal client of ours in the Vancouver area. The Civil Works Inspector will provide construction inspection quality assurance in the field for a wide array of large and small civil works, including construction of sewer and water mains, reservoirs and pump stations, and including lining, coating and materials inspection.

Responsibilities
•Inspect water, sewer, solid waste and other construction projects for conformity to specifications and drawings and ensure that general quality for the project is maintained.
•Read and interpret detailed engineering drawings for construction layout and for construction conformity.
•Prepare daily inspection reports, detailed diaries and attend pre-construction and site meetings with engineers and contractors.
•Maintain detailed written records concerning material quality and instructions to contractors.
•Maintain construction records (e.g. pipe laid, excavation quantities, concrete and reinforcing steel placed, bedding and backfill material used, etc.) for the preparation of progress estimates and “as built” records.
•Inspect and ensure quality of materials including aggregates, concrete, asphalt, pipe fabrication, linings and coatings at manufacturing plants.
•Inspect the field application of corrosion protection on pipelines.
•Perform engineering related calculations.
•Perform grade and alignment checks using survey equipment.
•Ensure staff and contractors adhere to safety regulations.
•Ensure that staff and contractors understand the specifications and drawings.
•Perform basic soil investigations.
•Oversee the work of contractors.
•Supervise and direct one or more junior staff.
•Perform other related duties.
Qualifications
• Intermediate Certificate in Civil Engineering Technology from BCIT or other recognized technical institute plus at least two years of directly related and progressive experience.
•Sound knowledge of standard engineering terminology and applicable practices.
•Ability to interpret and follow standards and specifications.
•Sound knowledge of quality control testing procedures regarding materials utilized in water, sewer and solid waste projects.
•Ability to communicate and deal effectively with internal staff, outside organizations, contractors and the public.
•Sound knowledge of safety procedures and WorkSafe regulations and ability to apply regulations.
•Intermediate experience in the use of computers and applicable software.
•Effective verbal and written communication skills.
•Demonstrated ability to supervise staff.
•Valid BC drivers license

To provide technical expertise, support and management for geotechnical engineering aspects of projects throughout the pursuit, design, tendering, and construction stages including:
Static and dynamic soil-structure interaction analyses;
Advanced stress-strain deformation and settlement analyses;
Geostructural design numerical analysis including complex soil and rock constitutive models and structural elements components;
Geotechnical and geostructural foundations design (shallow, raft and deep piles, helical piles, drive piles, cast-in situ piles, etc.) for small to large scale structures including buildings, facilities, bridges, embankments, transmission towers, wind towers, etc.;
Ground improvement design including pre-loading; wick/EQ drains; CMC; micro-piles; dynamic compaction; vibrocompaction; vibrostone columns; soil-mixing; various grouting; etc.;
Shoring and excavation support for temporary and permanent support including shafts, basements, underground access;
Tunnelling and trenchless works in all types of soil and rock conditions, SEM, NATM geostructural design, HDD, pipe ramming, pipe jacking, microtunnelling, etc.;
Reinforced soils engineered including gravity, MSE and Soil Nail walls systems;
Construction and permanent groundwater control/dewatering requirements including seepage assessment and cut-off wall design;
Geohazard assessment, slope stabilization and embankment design; and
Geotechnical support to design of dams, ponds, tailings and other retention systems including associated structures such as gravity-fed water channels, etc.
Qualifications
University graduate with a degree in geotechnical, geological or civil (geotechnical) engineering;
Possess EGBC registration (P.Eng. license)
Minimum 15 to 20 years of experience in Geotechnical/Geostructural engineering field, at least 10 of those years in consulting engineering in British Columbia
Experience with Detailed Design, Design Build and Owner’s Engineer Technical Advisor and Technical Peer Review role;
Geotechnical seismic design including site specific response analysis, liquefaction analysis, fully coupled dynamic soil-structure interaction analysis and geostructural foundation, lateral support and ground treatment design;
Capability in and directing numerical modelling using Plaxis, RS2/3, FLAC, Group/LPile, DeepX and other advanced capable geotechnical and geostructural software suites;
Proficiency with current geotechnical software applications including GeoStudio (Slope/W, Sigma/W, etc.) and Rocscience (Slide2/3, Settle3);
Good knowledge of local, national and international regulations (codes and standards) and technical references in geotechnical, geostructural, dams and tunnelling design for different types applications and structures;
Ability to lead, manage, direct and cooperate with a team in various environments, as well as work independently;
Strong written and oral communication (English) skills;
Strong attention to detail;
Strong analytical/technical, and report writing skills;
Desire to provide excellent, practical client service and a commitment to technical excellence;
Must be well organized, have the ability to manage and prioritize several assignments at one time, deliver on time and to budget;

Day-to-day as a Journeyperson, your responsibilities could include:- Synthesizing information from a variety of sources, including blueprints, plans and written specifications, in order to select proper materials and the needed amounts for a project
- Using details from written plans and instructions from supervisors in order to securely bolt metal structures like beams and columns together
- Transporting heavy metal pieces from the ground level to a higher location using tools like cranes or working with other team members to help position pieces correctly
